I am currently working in a school district in Eastern Long Island. I have received my master's degree from Dowling College in general and special education. In addition, my certification has been extended to include children from birth through ninth grade.

When I begin with students, I like to assess their abilities as well as communicate with parents as to what their expectations are for their child. Each child is unique and needs an individualized plan that focuses on strengths and interests. Learning should be fun and fulfilling. It does take time to understand what motivates the child, so in addition to a parent interview I interview the child. I like to start our sessions building a rapport with the child. The more I know about a child the easier it is to find ways to stimulate the child's interest in learning. The best part of teaching is watching children's eyes light up when they finally understand something that has been difficult for them in the past. It's great to know that I had a hand in their success.

I have worked with several students with ADD/ADHD for seven years and have a family member that I work with daily who is also diagnosed with ADD/ADHD.

I am currently certified in New York State to teach General Education and Students with Disabilities for students from birth through 9th grade. I have worked in a school district for the past 8 years with students with Autism, Intellectual Disabilities, ADD/ADHD and Learning Disabilities. I am familiar with the Barbara Wilson program which helps students with Autism learn the alphabet sounds. I also use a modified version of the ABA program which allows the students to practice their skills throughout their school day. The students I have worked with are in an inclusion setting in elementary school. They are able to participate in most lessons with support and prompting. However, each student I have worked with had their own IEP goals that also had to be met throughout the school year. We worked on academics as well as social skills training and kept records of their progress towards their IEP goals.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am currently certified in New York State to teach General Education and Students with Disabilities for grades 1-6. I have worked in a school district for the past 7 years.

I have been working in a school district in Hampton Bays for 8 years. I am familiar with the Barbara Wilson program. I have been the inclusion aide in 2nd and 3rd grade and did my student teaching in those grades. The students I worked with were not reading and we provided intense phonics instruction. I provided direct instruction and practice to these students. I was responsible for keeping data on their progress and modifying their instruction to focus on their trouble areas. We used a whole word approach, taking into account the meaning of the words also. Each of these students made significant progress and moved on average about 4 DRA reading levels by the end of the year.

Study Skills

I am currently employed as a one to one aide in the Hampton Bays Elementary School. I work in the 2nd grade with a student diagnosed with autism. In the past 6 months I have been responsible for this student’s curriculum with guidance given from the special education teacher and the consultant. I created lessons and have modified all of this student’s work to give the most appropriate access to the curriculum. I have modified the delivery of this curriculum and used various strategies for this student to show understanding of the concepts.

In addition, I have been at this school for eight years. In that time I have received my degree in special and general education from Dowling College and have extended my certification to include birth through ninth grade. While working in Hampton Bays I held the position of substitute teacher for one year, and a teacher’s aide in the 2nd and 3rd grades for 7 years. Although my title was inclusion aide, I performed the tasks of a teaching assistant. I created lesson plans, provided direct instruction and co-taught in the classrooms. In addition I have been tutoring a student in English for the past 2 years. I have been in continual contact with her 7th and 8th grade teachers and have created lessons for her to follow to help her in her reading comprehension as well as her writing. At this time she is working towards acceptance to either Annapolis or West Point. I have been helping her to achieve these goals by providing ways for her to study and write and creating a schedule for her to follow.
I am a member of the CHADD organization and use their website to assist in creating lessons and teaching my own daughter who has ADHD to study and create a schedule. We use different methods geared toward her strengths to study different subjects.
