I've been a teacher for 13+ years now. I'm NYS Certified in English, Spanish and Earth Science grades 7-12 and ESL (English as a Second Language) grades K-12. I've taught 6th and 9th grade Spanish, ESL K-5 and 6-8, Adult ESL, and Accelerated Earth Science. Being an ESL teacher forces me to be knowledgeable about ALL subjects. I've been able to help my students with everything from Math, to Science, Social Studies, ELA (English Language Arts), FACS (Family and Consumer Science), Technology, Music, Art, and Health (my mother worked for the NYS Health Department for 38 years). I am currently paid to teach ESL grades 6-8 and Accelerated Earth Science (grade 8) in an area school district. I'm not paid to teach anything other than those two subjects but find myself doing so everyday. Being a teacher is not just about subject knowledge but is more about being willing to help, to go that extra mile, to find a different way (or more than one different way) to explain something to a student so that they are able to comprehend. It's about making the information accessible to EVERY student. That's my goal. I've only listed that I would tutor Spanish, English, ESL and Earth Science, but honestly if a student needed a tutor in another subject area, I'd teach myself so I could teach them. I believe it's important to be a lifelong learner and that is exactly what I am.
