I have been a copy editor and proofreader, taught English (Grades 7-12) in two states, assisted elementary through middle school students -- including pre-teen students with learning disabilities -- in reading and writing English at two Kumon Learning Centers; tutored freshmen students in writing at Hofstra University's NOAH program; edited the MS thesis of a graduate student; and am currently tutoring a 10th grader in a Long Island public school, and an English Language Learner through Literacy Nassau.

I learned to read through phonics before I started kindergarten; that is, before "inventive" spelling was fashionable and when basics were emphasized.

I have great patience and excellent analytical skills that help me identify the source of a student's struggle with English. Furthermore, I like to use humor along the way to lighten things up!

I do hope we can work together. Nothing makes me happier than seeing a student improve their communication skills!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have helped children from K-6th grade with phonics, reading and writing at 2 Kumon Learning Centers. I am also tutoring a sixth-grader in writing through Wyzant. His mother is very happy with my work as is he.

I am also teaching phonics and spelling to someone learning English for the first time with methods used by Literacy Nassau, Inc.

I have mastered basic spelling and phonics skills since before I started my own formal education in 1961.

Finally, I have both a Master's degree and a Bachelor's degree in English, native fluency in Greek, which is the foundation of much of the English language, and I get along well with young people.

Greek

Greek was my first language, as I am the child of immigrants who knew little if any English when they came to the U.S. I attended Greek Language School as a middle-school student in Detroit and excelled in it. My husband, who was born in Greece, and I speak Greek at home. I oversaw and corrected my children's Greek Language School homework. I was hired to substitute for the director of the Greek Language School in my parish for one month while she was away. I have an MA in English, a language that developed out of many Greek words. I currently speak and write to many of my relatives living in Greece.

Phonics

I tutored children five and under at two Kumon Learning Centers using phonics. I also have a Master's degree in English.

Proofreading

Master's in English
Proofreader/copy editor for two newspapers
Corrected many students' papers
Errors seem to jump out at me

Reading

I have an MA degree in English, have guided even children with learning disabilities to be able to read using word families and phonics (sounding the word out) at two Kumon Learning Centers on Long Island, and have been a certified English teacher in two states.

Vocabulary

Masters degree in English
Professional journalist and editor
Several years of tutoring experience
Greek, the root of much of the English language, was my first language and I am fluent in it.

Writing

My experience includes twenty years as a professional writer, copy editor and proofreader; teaching certification in two states for Grades 7-12 in English; assisting elementary through middle school students -- including pre-teen students with learning disabilities -- in reading and writing English at two Kumon Learning Centers; several years as a writing tutor at Hofstra University's NOAH program, freelance writing guidance and editing for a graduate student writing his Master's thesis; and I am currently tutoring an English Language Learner.

Extremely effective tutoring — I have had several sessions with Sophia and feel my writing and comprehension skills have improved drastically. I am sure it will be reflected on my SAT in Spring. I have had many tutors over the years in different subjects. From my experience, Sophia, is one of the best at getting her point across and actually conveying her knowledge to me. I highly recommend her to anyone seeking help in English ...
