I am a former communication professional with strong interpersonal skills who seeks to work with a diverse population of students. As the daughter of immigrant parents, both of whom have benefited from ESL, teaching English is a personal passion of mine.
I recently completed my certification in TESOL at Teachers College, Columbia University, during which I instructed an ESL course for 12 intermediate ESL students. I developed lesson plans that were learner centered and created interactive classroom activities based on communicative language teaching techniques. I also have experience in administering and scoring language placement exams in the areas of reading, writing and speaking.
Prior to this, I volunteered with Reading Empowers, a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote literacy among students in New York City's elementary schools. I supervised and interacted with students in K-3 during 2-hour sessions every weekend. We read age-appropriate material to them and led discussions around the stories' main ideas. For the 3rd graders specifically, we practiced writing exercises in preparation for the NYS ELA exam.
