Since I finished my MFA degree in Film and TV Directing in 1997, I have continuously been working as a filmmaker and as a film professor for over 14 years now. My employment history spans several countries such as Bulgaria, Finland, the USA and Canada, covering activities both in the film industry and the educational fields. The spectrum of my filmography varies from narrative shorts, to short and feature-length documentaries, to TV documentary and fiction projects, to feature-length scripts and theatrical plays, to theatrical staging. My experience encompasses principal creative and technical involvement in these projects through directing, writing, producing, editing, cinematography and sound design. My continuous intense practicing in the film production field has kept me up-to-date with most innovative technologies (including film, video and digital production and post-production in most film and digital formats) and has earned me recognition as a professional authority on film. My works have been invited and showcased at countless renowned film forums on four continents; they have won a sustained international acclaim at numerous professional venues across the globe – including Cannes Film Festival’s official selection – and have consequently been crowned with multiple awards.
My film teaching experience includes over 4 years of college level teaching and another 3-4 years of tutoring and non-film related teaching and lecturing. My teaching expertise covers a relatively wide scope of disciplines, including Film/Video Directing (both fiction and documentary, with special emphasis on directing the actors), Producing, Screenwriting (documentary and fiction; short and feature), Digital Cinematography, Film/Video Production, Editing (proficient in Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, above medium expertise in Avid Media Composer), Acting, and Film Studies (film history, criticism and film theories). I have expertise and experience in theater as well.
My simplified teaching formula is: “work, work and work”. I tend to give my students a lot of work as I think there’s no better way of learning than practice, especially in film and video. Students tend to notice my enthusiasm before anything else about me. It creates relations based on responsibility, respect and personal example. The amount of work I expect them to complete is always matched with an even greater amount of work I myself do for them.
While I require strict direction following and complying with assigned tasks, I am at the same time exceptionally open to experimental and innovative ventures. My curiosity is normally given a strong push by the challenge to try unexplored technical and creative territories along with my students. The thrill for both students and instructor of discovering unpredictable results together while mastering basic skills, has become an important part in the process of student project realization.
