Hi! My name is Andrea and I would love to have the opportunity to work with your child. For the past 6 years, I have worked as a part-time reading teacher in Long Island. For the past 7 years, I have also worked as a Resource Room teacher. My students are children who attend Catholic or Jewish schools and don't have a Dept. of Ed. Resource Room in their schools. I work with students of all ages, from K-12. I help with homework, study skills, improve reading comprehension and decoding skills, math intensive programs and preparation for NYS ELA and Math exams. I have also worked with students to prepare them for the English and Writing sections of the SAT as well as TACHS tests, for those students who wish to attend Catholic H.S.
My students tend to like working with me because I am an excellent teacher, but run my sessions in a relaxed manner, so everyone learns in a comfortable atmosphere and has a good time. My supervisor at my school says that my talent is figuring out what a student needs, and address the problem on the spot. With younger children, I try to add games into the lessons to make it more fun. In respect to reading, I have had training in Orton-Gillingham and some training in Wilson Fundations. Also, in respect to reading, I focus on the students learning a variety of comprehension strategies, because I have found that so many children are word readers and have difficulty summarizing a passage or making connections to better understand the material. Learning these strategies also helps students in math, particularly when solving word problems.
I hope to have the opportunity to help your child have a successful school year.
