ACT math basically can be summarized by one sentence: Time limited, and with gradual difficulties to the end.
The most difficult part might be trigonometry, but it only has 4 or 5 question, and mostly at the end.
The strategy for taking ACT math would be take less time on other parts, such as pre-algebra, elementary algebra, intermediate-algebra, and some geometry. Additionally, algebra and geometry contain as much as 50% of total questions. Thus, I will take as much time to focus on these two areas.

First, the algebra is a critical and somewhat difficult course in high school. Second, the algebra can simply linked to our future career, such as computer, engineering...The algebra generally contains 6 main parts, including Arithmetic Operations, Fractions, Factoring, Quadratic Formula and graph related to the algebra equation.
1.For the first learner, students need to build up solid operation order in equation. For example: 3+2*3+8/2=?; What should we solve first, is it right to solve this problem from left to right, or need to consider some sort to particular order in this equation.
2.Fraction is leading students into different "Figure World". First of all, students need to solve basic addition, subtraction, multiply and division by using fraction. Second, students can be able to solve the problem like this:3/x-1+2/x+2=? To understand this problem, we need to find common denominator and then add up. Sounds fairly simple!
3.Factoring is relatively easy but still needs work. There is a formula to attach this type of problem, if you keep the formula in mind, it won't be too difficult. However, students need to reverse on some numbers.
4.Quadratic Formula basically has the same concept which strictly relies on formulas, it won't be an obstacle for students if you use formula effectively.

The best way to overcome elementary math is understanding addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fraction, decimal, percentage and average. These contents seem like a huge amount, but they are interactive with each other.
For example: "25%" -- to understand what percentage means, you have to have some knowledge of decimals (0.25) and fractions (25/100). Thus, once you understand basic multiplication, addition, and subtraction, you will easily get to the point of average and decimal problem.
Furthermore, I think Elementary math also requires students to know some basic algebra.

I think most students are struggling with practical questions. With long sentences which likes small paragraph, you have to solve like "what is average wage, length, distance...
Students will be stunned by these long sentences, and easily lose interest on this type of question.
For this type of problems, students don't really know how to eliminate some extra and unuseful words. So most students can't solved correctly, and probably do random guess.
The most important thing is that, students need to find the main words from each long sentences.
Algebra is another difficulty for students.
The other parts like geometry, data analysis, probability, statistics are relatively easier than other parts.
The subject of geometry is basically deal with some certain shape, and solve the problem like acquiring area, cube, circumference ... This subject also comes with strict formular to attach each question to get exact answer.
I personally think that the most struggling part for students is that they can't think question abstractly when comes to the certain shape. Once we build up the abstract figure in our mind, I think it is easy to crack the the problem of geometry!
Trigonometry requires you to have a better understanding of sine, cosine, tant, csc, sec, and cot. You have to understand what these represent and how can they switch together. Based on that, you have to sketch graphs from sine, cosine, etc. Also, the formula of sine, cos, tant, and so on are very important parts for verifying equations.
