Most students are familiar with solving for the unknown in basic arithmetic. Algebra takes this a step further by offering a sytematic way of solving real-life problems and calculating unknown quantities.
The majority of students encounter two problems in this subject: trouble with word problems and insufficient math discipline. There are some formulae that need to be memorized, of course, but ultimately a student's success depends on five factors.

With Geometry we enter the realm of the 1st Amendment particularly as it relates to free speech, for here you can make any assertion as long as you can prove it. Nothing is taken for granted and everything must be seen to be believed.
Geometry demands that the student know many theorems, axioms and postulates. A theorem is a statement that can be proved. A postulate is a statement that is assumed to be true. An axiom is simply a factual statement borrowed from Algebra.
The graphs, lines, real-life applications and diagrams that abound in Geometry make it quite friendly to visual learners. Once one has overcome the hurdle of proofs and new terminology, one will find that Geometry rewards those who are willing to work consistently while integrating new lessons with old.
The student who has mastered Algebra 1 will find himself called upon to utilize those skills in various equations that show up in Geometry. The student who hasn't will come close to scoring but somehow never makes it into the big league.
After weakness in Algebra, the next major source of trouble in Geometry is simply pacing.
The question that must be asked is:
How fast can this student thoroughly learn a new concept and build on previous knowledge without becoming confused in the rush to meet standards?
The ISEE offers many students an opportunity to write their own future by getting into their school of choice. ISEE stands for Independent School Entrance Examination. It is offered by ERB, the Educational Records Bureau.
The ISEE exam covers Verbal (vocabulary), Reading Comprehension, Quantitative Reasoning (ability to think with and use Math in unique situations) and finally it covers Mathematics.
The test has different levels for different grades: Lower, Middle and Upper.
After tutoring many students in the ISEE I have found that the best preparation starts with a solid education in Basics. A reading program that emphases depth and breadth of extensive reading on a daily basis would be the ideal prep. The singular difference between students on the ISEE is simply vocabulary, knowledge of.
As for the test itself, I have found that students need 6-12 weeks to prepare for the ISEE proper. Utilizing texts from various test-prep publishers as well as the ERB website itself, I have been able to quickly teach test-taking skills as well as subject content to excellent results.
