Hi, my name is Andy and I am currently attending graduate school for my Master's in Disability Studies. My focus within my program is working with children and education. My area of interest is understanding how a certain disability may play a significant role in the learning experience and process for a child with a disability.
A little bit about myself is that my work as an undergraduate student was also in the Disability Studies field. I had a strong background in learning about children with disabilities ranging from cognitive impairments, learning disorders, and autism. I really enjoyed the area of study and I started volunteering with children with autism. My experience with the children varied greatly as the level of autism ranged from mild to severe. My goal with the children was to create a calm and relaxing environment as I helped to develop their social skills.
My methods for working with children with disabilities would be to use a person first approach. I look at the individual rather than the disability because that is not the defining character of a person. I know and understand how to use appropriate language and teaching techniques to work with children with different disabilities. At the end of the day, my understanding is that even though children with disabilities require a different level and type of education, they still want to be treated like any other child their age.
To sum it all up, I have a great passion for the subject I have learned, and am continuing to learn. It really pleases me to help and work with children who have disabilities and I feel that I would be a great tutor to help a child who has a rough time learning.
