I completed my PhD degrees in August 2009 and in July 2000. I believe that my academic training and my three years of experience working as a previous faculty member in Beijing University of Technology prepare me to be an effective tutor. I have 18 research papers/book/book chapter/thesis, where most of my research papers are published in high quality journals. I was awarded research grants and teaching grants when I worked in Beijing University of Technology. I am reviewer for Mathematical Reviews since 6/2009. I have more years higher education teaching experience in English speaking environment. I very much get familiar with teaching materials in junior school and high school, such algebra, geometry, precalculus, calculus, differential equations, etc as I listed in my application.
I believe that good planning leads to good teaching. I must have an accurate understanding of the topics I am teaching; I must have a clear idea on how to deliver the topics to the students. Only when I understand the topic deeply, will I be able to explain it to students well. I am patient and treated each student with respect, very well and fairly. My students like the teaching style in my class, such that students feel comfortable asking questions. I sincerely considered for students by their reasonable requests.
In the Spring 2012, I meticulously spent a lot of time teaching Calculus II (directed reading course). I made great efforts to teach this course well based on the four students' very complicated schedules. At the beginning, the four students asked me to meet them twice each week, so I divided the four students into two groups: A and B. In each group, there are two students. In each class, I sometimes let two students work together on blackboard for some problem. I noticed they did well. I am very pleased that some students often discussed questions with me. I always consider the questions very carefully, write solutions and try best to answer the questions timely and very clearly because some of questions they asked are very interesting, such that the students can learn further fundamental mathematical idea, method and skill. I am very happy that some students are very friendly. They communicated with me very well. In the final exam, some student got very high credit (90 percent). In this course, besides the above regular classes I mentioned, I added 12 classes (in each class, there are 75 minutes), including above three exams. After the 12 classes, I feel all students really improved.
The professional experience of mine these years have provided me with a broad view that is useful in assisting students with projects and assignments. I have developed confidence and interest in teaching assigned courses. In all of my teaching, I view students to learn how to take advantage of that accessibility as an integral part of success in my work. I thoroughly enjoy the teaching experience of endowing my students with the knowledge and capability to achieve their goals.
