I am a native New Yorker who has recently retired from teaching and moved "back home." I spent 15 years teaching in private elementary schools in Los Angeles and, although I love retirement I miss the students! Many of my "formers" and their families and I still keep in touch.
Teaching was a passion for me. Seeing the children's "Aha!" moments was so gratifying. I tried to address all learning styles through reading, discussion, drawing, singing, acting and incorporating manipulatives. I always told the class it isn't how one learns that's important - preferred modalities are fine, as long as the student achieves the end result. I am especially interested in language arts and have a deep love of the social aspects of American history.
I firmly believe that learning needs to incorporate the whole student. To that end I always asked parents to inform me of anything happening at home that might help me to help a student- an illness, the death of a pet, out-of-town visitors - things that could have an impact - positive as well as negative - on a student's emotional well being. I freely gave my phone number to all of the parents and encouraged them and the students to call if they needed help with homework, had a question about any school-related subject or just wanted to talk. Many students and parents were in touch for chats, advice or an assist.
I look forward to working with students who may need such help now. I will gladly provide references and would be delighted to meet with prospective students and parents.
I believe I am qualified to instruct students in handwriting for a number of reasons. I have worked with students on their penmanship following the guidelines in school programs and am familiar with Handwriting Without Tears, a progressive program that takes students from basic to the more difficult letter formations. I am still a firm believer that a handwritten note far "outranks" an oral or emailed message. Through the years, I have been complimented on my writing. I always strive for legible, well-formed, neat script.
I am currently working through WyzAnt with a student taking the global studies Regents in June. We have worked together using the Barron's prep test, her New York State global studies textbook and various other sources dealing with global studies and world history.
I have taught social studies, specifically American history, for 15+ years at the elementary level. Combined with the resources currently available I believe I am qualified to tutor in the subject.
Best teacher — I really love my tutor. She does a great job. Plus, she is really patient and funny. I have been learning a lot and she referred two really good books that will help my learning process. ...
