My name is Matthew. I received a BA in philosophy
from Binghamton University and a Master's in Theological Studies from Boston College. Currently, I am substitute teacher in the Homer Central School District, and I am looking for more teaching opportunities. I am interested in tutoring on the subjects of philosophy and theology/religious studies. As an undergraduate I studied analytic philosophy, Buddhist ethics/metaphysics, and certain branches of continental philosophy. As a graduate student at Boston College, I studied Thomas Aquinas, Christian metaphysics, Christology, the Bible (although let it be known that I do not speak Greek
, or Hebrew
), and advanced logic
But enough about me! What about you? What are you struggling with? Perhaps it is philosophy. What did Aristotle mean by form and matter? What is this business
about Plato and the cave? Or perhaps you're struggling with more modern subjects. Who was Kant? What on earth is he talking about when he mentions the "categorical imperative"? What does Descartes mean by cogito ergo sum? In addition to modern and ancient philosophy, I can help you with 20th century analytic/continental philosophy. Whether you are having trouble understanding Heidegger and Husserl or Kripke and Wittgenstein, I can help you. Furthermore, I would be comfortable tutoring on the subject of introductory logic (i.e basic proofs
, truth tables, and some predicate logic).
However, if you are not struggling with philosophy, but religious studies, I can also lend a helping hand. I can help you understand the Bible, Biblical history
, Thomas Aquinas/Medieval theology/philosophy, Christian doctrine/metaphysics and Christology (that is, what was meant by saying Jesus was both human and divine?). Additionally, I spent a good deal of time studying Buddhism, and would be willing to tutor on that subject as well.
Before I close I would briefly like to touch upon my teaching philosophy. I believe in treating students as partners in education. It is my hope that through mutual respect and dialogue, we will have an enriching and beneficial experience together. That said, I am going to challenge you! I don't believe in giving away "easy answers." In the long run, it will only be a disservice to you. Instead, I want you to think, reason, and problem solve! It is my hope that, I will not only help you through your classes, but help you create a better understanding of the subject matter in general.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions about information covered (or not covered!) here.
P.S. I am willing to offer a free "meet and greet" first session.

My rate is negotiable. If you are a poor college student and cannot afford my rate, I am willing to figure something out!
