Ever since I was a teenager, I was very good at math and literacy. So, volunteer tutoring my classmates started at that time and it lasted for years well into my first segment of nine years teaching job in China.
I started a teaching job in 1985 when I graduated from a teachers university in China majored in mathematics education. After 9 years of college and secondary school math teaching, I immigrated to USA. Later on, I made a small career change to teach ESL for 3 years. During my Columbia University studying period, I picked up Math/ELA teaching again in the public high schools in New York City for a year, while I did Chinese teaching for 3 years.
So, my total teaching experience added up to 15 years, plus 20 years of tutoring (math, Chinese, ESL) experience. The most profound tutoring experience for me is to help my two wonderful kids through their elementary and secondary years. They are on the honor roles every year. Now, they are well on their feet. They make me a proud mother at every PTA meeting.
My teaching philosophy is to find student's strengths and to praise him/her everyday. In my opinion, this is the best way to motivate my student to achieve higher goals and to reach his/her full potential. It is my pleasure to find the tiny spark and to enlarge it in order to become a flaming fire one day.
Every student is a raw gold and will shine if you know how to polish it. Let me be your child's goldsmith and you will be delighted soon.
Thank you!
