I have tutored and taught on three continents and in five countries. I speak 12 languages, and am an expert in foreign language education, ESL, SAT prep, the mechanics of the English language, writing and composition. In addition, I am a seasoned teacher in Biology, Earth Science, Aviation, Geography/Social Studies/History and acculturation (US, UK, Japan, Germany, Austria, Italy). I am also a licensed pilot.

I have over twenty years experience, and have taught all ages and levels, having been employed in public schools, private schools, at The College of William and Mary's lower division, where I taught ESL, Stony Brook University (German 301/302), Oxford (ESL), and in corporate settings. I believe in facilitating the student, not teaching at her. The student retains that knowledge which he "owns", i.e., when he discovers it on his own. In foreign language/ESL I employ the total immersion approach, where the student becomes fluent and facile with the language in the shortest amount of time. My greatest reward is in transferring my enthusiasm for the material to my students. Learning is a collaborative effort and a great adventure!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have worked with many students with ADD/ADHD throughout my many years of teaching and have taken many courses in techniques useful for ADHD students to achieve their full potential. I am familiar with behavior modification, medications, brain re-training, and IEPs used in the education of ADHD students. I am also the mother of a child with ADHD and a person with ADHD myself. I have developed many coping skills that I can share with these highly gifted students.

Anatomy

I have taught Anatomy and Physiology on the high school level, as well as middle school and high school Biology.

ASVAB

I took the ASVAB in 1982 and scored 100% in all areas. I have worked with both the US Navy and Marine Corps for over 15 years, and have served as an education officer.

Biology

I have five years' experience teaching middle school and high school Biology. I believe in student centered learning, in which the student discovers the material with the help of coaching by the teacher. In this way the student can better assimilate the material, and make it his/her own, resulting in greater understanding and retention.

College Counseling

I was a college counselor in a public school for gifted and talented students, in Virginia. I have placed students in schools ranging from small private institutions to prestigious state schools and Ivy League institutions. I have been successful in finding funding for almost all of my students, many of whom received full rides.

Dutch

I am fluent in Dutch, having spoken it every day for ten years at KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. I ran a help desk for Dutch passengers traveling in the US.

English

I have taught English on the high school level in the US and in Japan, in an international school. I also have a UK license in ESL, which I have taught for many years on the elementary, middle, high school, as well as University levels. I am an expert in the mechanics of the language.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught ESL for over twenty years, including in a university setting at Richard Bland College of the College of William and Mary and at Oxford University, where I received my UK license in ESL.

I have taught corporate executives in several countries, high school and middle school students in an international school in Japan and elementary and middle school students in the US, and have experience with all ages and ability levels.

European History

I have taught European History at a public high school for gifted and talented students, and in a private middle school, both in Virginia.

GED

I am a multi-subject high school teacher with over twenty years experience. I specialize in English composition and grammar, sciences and history/social studies. I have had experience coaching students in the GED since 1990.

Geology

I have taught Earth Science for the last ten years, either in the classroom, or as a tutor. All of my students pass the Earth Science Regents. I believe in student-centered learning, where the student participates in learning the material, and is fact checked for understanding. Students retain information that they participate in "discovering". I conduct extensive review, and use practice Regents during the final review process.

German

I have taught German on the university level where I taught upper level courses, in high school, and to corporate executives. I have native fluency in German.

Grammar

I am an expert in the mechanics of the English language. I have a Master's degree in Germanic languages and Linguistics, English being a Northwest Germanic language. I have taught middle school, and high school English, ESL, and foreign languages, and generally take a comparative linguistic approach with adult learners. I have also taught SAT English preparation, which concentrates heavily on grammar.

Physical Science

I have taught middle school science for several years. This includes Physics, and Chemistry overview, plus 8th and 9th grade Biology and Earth Science, including Honours Biology and Honours Earth Science.

I believe in student-centered learning, in which the student discovers the information with the help of the teacher as coach and mentor. This results in greater retention than in the lecture based model.

Regents

I have been a classroom teacher for over twenty years, and have taught Regents subjects. None of my students have ever failed a Regents Exam. This year I tutored ten students individually, several of whom had failing grades, and all finished the year with a B or above.

SAT Writing

I have taught SAT prep in public high schools in Richmond, VA, for several years. I was able to improve my students' scores on average between 50-150 points per section, and between 2-5 raw points on the essay(based on a maximum of 12 essay points).

Social Studies

I have taught middle school social studies at St Joseph School, Petersburg, VA. I have also taught world and European history on the high school level.

Spanish

I have taught Spanish on the elementary and middle school level.

TOEFL

I have several years experience preparing students for the TOEFL exam. I have taught ESL on the university level, and understand what is required in order to pursue a university education in the US.

World History

I have taught World History both in middle school and in high school for a total of three years.

Writing

I have taught writing and composition on the middle school, high school and university level for both native speakers of English, and non-native speakers, as well as in German on the university level. I am expert in the mechanics of the English language.

I am also an editor and translator in several languages.
