Throughout my academic career at St. John Fisher College, I have gained a considerable amount of experience as a chemistry tutor. I worked for the Office of Academic Affairs, who would send me certain students for either 1-on-1 or group tutoring that were struggling with the class material. I began tutoring organic chemistry to other undergraduate students two years ago. As time went on, I expanded my tutoring to include both general chemistry and physical chemistry. I strive to help students in any way that I can whether it is oral explanation, written explanation, or visual illustration through the use of a model kit. I have found that it is extremely useful to not only help a student understand the material, but to show him/her how to apply it and guide the application.
During my sessions, I bridge between concepts and related material to help the student make connections. My students often find that they can take a concept I taught them in organic and then be able to apply it to other chemistry classes as well. I believe it is important to expose students to different ways of thinking in order to help them become more effective in all their academic endeavors.
