I recently moved to the Watertown area because my husband is stationed at Fort Drum. I previously lived in the Chicago, IL area. In 2009 I graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in Elementary Education. While at the University of Illinois I student taught kindergarten and fifth grade. Following graduation I was hired as a third grade teacher. I taught third grade for two years. Many of my students were bilingual, with their native language being Spanish. Many of my classroom activities focused on English as a Second Language development, which meant that I focused a lot on reading comprehension, phonics, and vocabulary. During both of my years as a classroom teacher I taught an inclusive special education classroom. This means that I had students with special needs in my classroom. The special education resource teacher and I worked together to differentiate lessons to meet the needs of these students. I also had a group of advanced gifted students who I adapted lessons to meet their needs as well. I am currently looking for a teaching position in the Watertown area for the following school year.
I believe that learning should be fun, hands on, and meet the needs of the individual students. In my experience as a teacher I have learned that students retain more knowledge when they feel that they can relate to the topic and are active while learning. My lessons are designed not only to meet the students' academic needs, but their learning style as well.
I am available to tutor all elementary level subjects (kindergarten through 6th grade) and some middle school or high school level subjects. I will tutor students who need extra support to meet grade level standards or students who are above grade level and are looking for a challenge. Tutoring may focus on reading comprehension, vocabulary development, phonics, math concepts and problem solving, writing/grammar, content areas (Social Studies, Science), or additional tutoring opportunities can be determined.
