I have 17 years of teaching experience from the sixth grade through college, in fields ranging from global history and western civilization to United States history and government. The early focus of my career was in social studies education at the middle and high school levels, including five years teaching in a Bronx middle school. For the past nine years I have been a professor of history at Buffalo State College, where I teach courses in United States, global, and European history. I am permanently certified in secondary social studies education in New York State, and experienced in preparation for New York State Regents exams, as well as the History and Social Sciences section of the New York State Liberal Arts and Sciences Test.
Through age and skill-appropriate reading and individualized instruction, I have excelled at teaching history and social studies to students who do not learn these subjects easily. By focusing on the heart of a given subject and avoiding unnecessary details, most matters of history and social studies can be simplified and made accessible to any audience.
The course of American history is marked by the advancement of liberty and opportunity from a limited few to the bulk of the population over the course of 200 years. My experience in teaching American history is diverse, with 3 years of experience in 7th grade social studies and many semesters of experience in college-level American history. In classroom instruction and assessment I focus on relevant primary source documents and document-based questions. I have been teaching students to write effective answers to essay questions for many years.
My experience in economics, including micro, macro, public and social economics, has mostly been gained through the teaching of social studies and history over the course of 15 years. I am certified to teach the senior year high school course in economics, and occasionally tutor students in that subject. My focus in teaching economics is on real world examples and the logical relationships between economic actions and reactions.
European history through the early twentieth century is the story of advancing European power in the world. Since the world wars, the story is European decline and adjustment. The origins of Western thought and action, the expression of Western values, and the ongoing development of Western lifestyles are elemental to the study of Europe. My experience in teaching European history is at the 10th grade and college levels, with a focus on reading and writing in the curriculum.
All my experience in teaching United States, European, and Global history is closely related to matters of physical and human geography. From political maps and environmental matters to human movement and organization, geography is at the base of all broad studies of history and culture. It is also a considerable factor in understanding relationships between people on a local and regional basis.
The form and function of the American government, and the political process by which we populate and influence that government, are areas of great interest to me personally and as a teacher. Any period of American history that I teach requires strong attention to the political decision-making and leadership of the time. I am continually strengthening my background in the United States Constitution, as well as state and local government organization, through new books and articles and daily attention to the national and local political cultures.
A great deal of my experience in tutoring is in exam prep for the United States History and government and the global studies Regents exams. Through the use of old exam materials and discussion/notetaking in specific subject areas, I cover test format, scoring, and strategy, as well as the content that most commonly appears in each of these exams. I also work with students in the writing portions of the exams, focusing on structure and style as well as content.
In world history, my focus is on the major movements and peoples that predate the modern world, as well as those that have come to shape the modern world. I maintain a base of knowledge from the ancient Greeks and Romans, through the major cultures of the non-European world that have flourished for ages. I have experience teaching world history at the 6th, 9th, and 10th grade levels. I currently teach a course in twentieth century global history at the college level. My assessment has always required a mix of essay and short-answer writing, as well as more rigid multiple-choice question and answer.
Great tutor. He picked up on my child's insufficiencies and was very helpful in correcting them. — Terrence H was instrumental in helping my child break the barrier of resistance to learning and understanding the subject material (AP World History). Her grade was raised by 8 points in one month! He was very patient and was able to motivate her to improve her skills and test-taking abilities. I definitely and highly recommend him as a Social Studies tutor. He is very polite, well-prepared, ...
