I hold an M.A. in Philosophy, a teaching qualification (secondary school), and my B.A. was completed in England. Apart from Classics, Greek, and Latin, I also tutor Spanish, English, ESL or ESOL, Grammar, Vocabulary, Writing, TOEFL, and more! Please read my WyzAnt profile for a complete list of subjects I tutor, as well as each of the subject descriptions, and to find out about my approach to teaching them.

Trained in critical thinking and in logic and verbal reasoning, I am especially interested in the way in which our minds process and store new information. I teach students by developing a method which suits each learner's particular strengths, so that he can acquire, remember, and use new information as efficiently as possible. This doesn't mean that learning cannot be fun! In fact, the more efficient your study methods, and the more proficient your study skills - I can help you with both - the more fun you will have, since you would not be wasting time using learning methods which do not suit your learning style. As a consequence you will learn more quickly and more easily. Over twenty years in full-time education, and many years in classroom teaching and home tutoring, have taught me this.

I first taught in a classroom in 1998. I have taught in a classroom situation in the U.S., South Africa, England, and Taiwan; and I have tutored students at home in Israel, Taiwan, and the U.S. My students' ages range from 6 to 50 years old; and they have come from all walks of life. I grew up speaking English, Chinese, and Spanish - attending classes in all three languages simultaneously and speaking these languages at home - and I studied French for over five years. I plan to start studying German in the next year.

I love learning new things, and teaching the things I have learned adds to this enjoyment and helps solidify the relevant concepts. I especially love languages. The theory of linguistic relativity (Sapir-Whorf) postulates that the language we speak affects the way we view reality. As a speaker of multiple languages and as an experienced teacher of students whose mother tongues have ranged from African languages to French, Portuguese, Turkish, Korean, Chinese, and Japanese, I can attest to the validity of the theory. I'm also constantly amazed by the differences between British and American English, and I'm very interested in keeping track of these!

I am fascinated by Western antiquity, and the opportunity to study history through the study of languages which are no longer spoken is what keeps me interested in the ancient and classical world. I have decided to devote the rest of my life to the study of antiquity and not a day goes by that I do not read some Latin, Greek, or both, in addition to keeping up my reading about the ancient world.

I'm also a freelance copy-writer, and I proofread and edit academic papers in sociology, ontology, and philosophy. I also have a background in writing and editing articles for Business-to-Business magazines. I maintain an online profile which shows my top scores in tested skills such as Editing Skills, Academic Writing, Business Writing, and British v.s. American English. My clients got to know my work during the years when I worked as a security industry trade journalist.

As a trained philosopher, I enjoy applying my skills in logical and verbal reasoning, and I very much enjoy disputation! I have been a voracious reader from a very young age: I have been reading English and World Literature since age 8, started reading philosophy in my early 20s, and for a decade I've also kept up my reading in history, classical literature, social theory, and current affairs. Additionally, I'm interested in the so-called "national psyche" of each country I have lived in and visited - almost two dozen - and of the countries I hope to visit one day; I also consider myself a life-long student of the human psyche.

In my free time, you will find me reading both for coursework and for pleasure; watching British sitcoms, dramas, or mysteries; building up my collection of vintage clothes, especially full-skirted dresses, and my collection of books; and shopping at the local Chinese grocery store and health food store - I love to eat, and I look after my physical well-being!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

In addition to ACT English, I also tutor ACT Reading, SAT Reading, SAT Writing, and TOEFL. I am a certified teacher and experienced home tutor, and I tutor a total of 25 subjects!

ACT Reading

Reading comprehension involves proficiency in both logical and verbal reasoning. Let me, a trained philosopher (with plenty of practice in critical thinking!), show you how to tackle the different factors at play in a reading comprehension question so that you can take them all into consideration before choosing the correct answer!

Archaeology

I plan to enter a PhD program in Classics soon. Classical archaeology is a major component of studies in Classics. I have studied mainly Greek archaeology, but I can also teach you the basics in non-Greek archaeology of the ancient and classical periods.

Chinese

I am a certified teacher and experienced home tutor. A native speaker of Mandarin Chinese, I was educated in Chinese, Spanish, and English - all at the same time, from age 7 onwards. I have lived in 7 different countries, both in the West and in the East (where I worked as a trade journalist in Taiwan), and I have travelled to at least a dozen more.

Classics

I'm a student at the University at Buffalo's Department of Classics. I have a 4.0 GPA, and I plan to enter a Classics PhD programme soon. At present, I hold a B.A. and an M.A. in Philosophy. My love of antiquity, most especially Greek antiquity, first blossomed through the study of Plato. I'm a vocal supporter of the study of the ancient and classical languages, as this study trains the mind to think analytically in a way only surpassed by the study of philosophy. Please feel free to browse the other subjects I teach on my profile, including Philosophy, Greek, and Latin.

Elementary Math

My reasoning abilities were honed during the years when I trained as a philosopher. In addition, I taught Elementary School-level classes in Taiwan. The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) is an international assessment of the mathematics and science knowledge of fourth grade and eighth grade students around the world. TIMSS 2007 placed Taiwan in the No 1 spot for 8th Grade Mathematics. Let me help you with your maths questions!

English

As a former classroom teacher and longtime tutor, I have found that communication is the key to successful engagement with the world. This means that, in order to understand and be understood, one has to be able to speak the national language as well as know the conventions of that language. One's performance in the workplace, in school, and in other professional or social settings is dependent on one's ability to communicate effectively with not only one's peers, but people of all ages. This is where I come in! Not only do I have degrees in English / Literature (one from a U.K. university), but I'm also a trained philosopher, which means that I've had a lot of practice in verbal as well as logical reasoning. I'm also multilingual - not only have I mastered the art of effective communication in English, but I am able to do the same in other languages!

ESL/ESOL

I received my TEFL certificate in 1998, from the Royal Society of Arts/Cambridge exam board (now OCR (Oxford, Cambridge and RSA Examinations)). In 2004, I returned to ESOL teaching once again, this time to speakers of African languages, Portuguese, and French. In 2005, I received my teaching qualification (QTS - Qualified Teacher Status) from the General Teaching Council for England (GTCE - now the Teaching Agency), and with this qualification I taught secondary school English (ages 11-18). Since then I have been a home tutor to speakers of Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, and Turkish.

European History

Having lived, worked, and studied in England for 7 years, I am at present a Classics student. As such, I am particularly interested in the history of England and of Great Britain, and of the Mediterranean region.

General Computer

I have been using computers and the Internet for 14 years in my capacities as an electronic security trade journalist, copy-editor, concierge service operations manager, classroom teacher, private tutor, undergrad student, and grad student.

Grammar

As a freelance copy-editor and former trade journal editor, I think of myself as a walking guide to common grammar and usage problems. Additionally, as a trained philosopher, I have studied the philosophy of logic, paying close attention to linguistics principles (logic and linguistics having more than a few things in common). Finally, as a philosopher and a classicist (Latin and Greek), I am accustomed to discussing the correct use of punctuation; finding ways to make a smooth transition from one idea to another; and thinking about the usage and rules of transitive verbs, collective nouns, and much more.

Greek

My love for the ancient Greek language and for ancient Greek thought and culture is what made me return to full-time study with the aim of obtaining a PhD in classics. Within the discipline of classics my interest is focused on classical languages and literature. I have a 4.0 GPA, and I am an enthusiastic supporter of the study of Greek and Latin. When tutoring students, I begin with Homeric Greek, by translating passages from the "Iliad" and the "Odyssey" into English, paying close attention to the grammar and structure of this ancient Indo-European language; and then I move on to Attic Greek to continue practising using the skills acquired through the study of the Homeric dialect.

Latin

I'm an avid supporter of studying the ancient and classical languages. My concentration within classics is classical languages and literatures, and not a single day goes by that I do not read and study some Latin or some Greek, or both. Studying Latin and Greek takes dedication and a true love of languages, as well as being very curious about the way that the ancestors of Western culture lived and thought. I am deeply attached to the study and the teaching of the languages of the ancient Western civilizations; I have decided to devote my life to these studies and my success in this field and enjoyment of undertaking research in it, define me as a person. I look forward to teaching you Latin!

Literature

A certified classroom teacher of English and ESOL English, and longtime home tutor, I majored in Philosophy and English, have a graduate degree in Philosophy and Comparative Literature, and I am at present studying Classics (Latin and Greek). English literature and World literature (I speak multiple languages) have had more prominent a place in my life than anything else.

Logic

I hold both a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree in Philosophy; the former from a U.K. university and the latter from a U.S. university. As a philosopher, I have been trained in critical thinking and in logical and verbal reasoning. After having studied Aristotle's works on logic, I decided to study Classics in order to be able to read the world's first logic texts in their original language - ancient Greek. I will show you how to tackle those tricky logic multiple-choice questions!

Microsoft Word

I have been using Microsoft Word for 14 years: First, as an undergrad; next, as a classroom teacher; after that, as a private tutor; then, as a trade journalist and freelance copy-editor; and finally, as a grad student. I can show you how to use features such as "Track changes" and CV templates; and how to insert customized tables, symbols, footnotes, page numbers, and others. I can also teach you how to write an annotated bibliography; and show you the basics of different writing styles.

Philosophy

I hold a B.A. in philosophy from a U.K. university, and an M.A. in philosophy from the University at Buffalo, State University of New York. I enjoy disputation! I believe that, by reading through Plato's dialogues, one by one, a philosopher realizes that there are always more things to learn about the traditional philosophical issues. Deeply influenced by Plato's "Republic", I am also an advocate of many of Protagoras' views, and Nietzsche's and Kierkegaard's. In fact, ancient philosophy has had such a great influence on my development as a thinker that at present I am completing a degree in Classics in order to be able to read the philosophical works of the ancients in their original language.

Prealgebra

I have taught Elementary School subjects to students in Taiwan, whose skills in mathematics are very strong. Please read my subject description for Elementary Mathematics, and feel free to browse my profile!

Proofreading

Other than tutoring the 25 subjects listed on my profile, I'm also a freelance copy-writer, and I edit academic papers and non-academic articles in sociology, ontology, philosophy, and other disciplines. I maintain an online profile which shows my top scores (top 10% of site users) in tested skills such as Editing Skills, Academic Writing, Business Writing, and British v.s. American English. My clients got to know my work during the years when I worked as a security industry trade journalist, and also while I have been pursuing an academic career. I'd be happy to show you examples of my work; please ask if interested!

Reading

I tutor 30 subjects on WyzAnt.com, including SAT Reading and ACT Reading. I am certified to teach secondary school-level English, and I have tutored this subject for many years.

SAT Reading

I'm a certified English teacher and experienced tutor. Literature and the study of languages are my primary interests. As an avid reader, and lover of the written and spoken language (I speak several languages), I have had students tell me that before they had me as their tutor, they used to dislike having to study languages, but now they enjoy it! Feel free to browse all the subjects I teach, on my profile.

SAT Writing

As a former journalist, a freelance copy-editor, a Grad School graduate, and a trained philosopher, writing is one of my main interests and as such I pay meticulous attention to the way I use words to express myself as concisely and clearly as possible. When writing, one should aim to avoid superfluous words and phrases, tautologies, and passages which sound "learned" but are empty of meaning. Let me show you how to improve your ability to express yourself in written language!

Social Studies

In addition to being a certified teacher, experienced home tutor, and academic, I am also a former trade journalist (technology) and freelance copy-editor. My clients include scholars in the fields of ontology and sociology. I'm a trained philosopher and my studies emphasized social thought. In fact, the first social studies were begun with the dialogues of Plato, in which he discusses a wide variety of topics which today come under the rubric of sociology, social studies, psychology, physics, philosophy, linguistics, religious studies, economics, political science, anthropology, and many other disciplines.

Furthermore, as a classicist (my current field of studies), I study many of the fields covered by social studies, including political science, sociology, history, ancient world economy, religious studies and myth, anthropology, etc.

Social studies can be defined as the study of aspects of human society. Since I was educated in three languages simultaneously, in four different countries, and I have additionally worked in other countries across the globe, I have had exposure to more different kinds of human society (and their values) than most people I know. First-hand experience of the different facets of societies, East and West, has given me the ability to understand the myriad factors affecting each, so that I can expound on topics not covered by textbooks.

Spanish

Growing up in South America, I was educated in Spanish, English, and Chinese - all at the same time. My skills in all three languages as well as in other academic subjects gave me the top place in the class in all the subjects I took. I have tutored Indo-European languages for many years (including Spanish) and have a profound love of languages. Tutoring can take place with or without the aid of textbooks; for example, in conversational Spanish classes I place less empahasis on grammar and language structure and more on being able to speak phrases in common usage. In these classes, I also tailor the conversation topics to the needs of the students (e.g. Spanish for the purposes of travelling, emigrating to a Spanish-speaking country, passing a test, getting to know Argentinean culture or Spanish culture, etc.)

Speech

I was educated in the U.K., and I'm an avid supporter of correct pronunciation, grammar usage, and sentence structure in both spoken and written communication. As a trained philosopher, I believe in being concise yet accurate in the use of vocabulary to express one's exact meaning. Furthermore, as an experienced teacher both in the classroom and in the tutoring environment, I believe that oral communication needs to be effective in conveying the concepts which students have to grasp in the process of learning the target language or the target academic subject/area of study.

Spelling

As a former trade journalist and longtime academic, and a voracious reader, writing has had a central place in my life for three decades. And what is writing without one of its most basic components - the ability to spell words correctly? Not only do I excel in writing (and spelling!) in American English, but the same applies to my skills in British English. Don't sell yourself short - let me show you how to improve your spelling!

Study Skills

I have been in full-time education for 21 years. I hold a B.A. in Philosophy and English, an M.A. in Philosophy and Comparative Literature, and at present I am studying Classics (Latin and Greek).

I am also a certified classroom teacher, and I have been a home tutor since 2006. As a successful learner and experienced teacher, over the years, I have implemented the best strategies to help me process and retain new information, according to my learning style and strengths, and I can teach you to do the same. I can show you how best to use your time so that you can learn as efficiently as possible.

I am a highly rated and experienced teacher who understands that successful study skills are the key to learning and retaining new information. I know how to maximize the potential which each student has. Often this potential may seem hidden to you, if you have not yet discovered how you learn and study best. My philosophy is to attack the work "from all sides", meaning use as many different approaches as it takes in order to help you retain the piece of information you aim to acquire and then store in your brain.

TOEFL

I have tutored both native and non-native speakers of English for many years. I have taught in Taiwan, South Africa, Israel, England, and the U.S. I've had students whose mother tongues were French, Portuguese, Turkish, Chinese, Japanese, and various African languages. I'm a certified teacher and I've also taught other Indo-European languages.

Vocabulary

In order to write and communicate verbally in an effective and efficient manner, it is necessary to use words as concisely and precisely as possible. This is where having command of good vocabulary comes in. I have mastered the use of English vocabulary to such an extent that I have published articles in trade journalism, and I have written academic papers (I have graduated from Grad School). As someone trained in Philosophy, Literature and English, Social Thought, Classics, and Education, I have also written papers in various fields, each with its own set of jargon. I've also tutored both native and non-native speakers of English for many years, and as such I have experience teaching students how to improve their vocab.

World History

A student of the ancient and classical worlds, I have also lived, worked, and studied in Bolivia, Argentina, South Africa, Israel, England, Taiwan, and the U.S. I was educated in three languages simultaneously: English, Spanish, and Chinese. Additionally, as a former trade journalist, I have worked with industry experts in the U.K., Scandinavia, Israel, India, the U.S., Southeast Asia, and Taiwan. I am fascinated by the "national psyche" of every country I have visited and ever hope to visit. History, along with Classics, Philosophy, Social Thought, and Literature, is one of my main interests.

Writing

As a former trade publication journalist, I have had numerous articles published both in print and online. And, as an academic I have written papers in Philosophy, Social Thought, Classics, Literature and Comparative Literature, and Education; and I have copy-edited papers in Philosophy, Sociology, and Ontology. I can show you how to become a skilled writer in your field, or for Elementary/High School purposes.
