I am currently a 1st grade teacher at King Center Charter School. Here, I have the opportunity to teach ELA, writing, math and pull small groups for AIS math and ELA instruction. The students I work with have shown an average of a 35% increase in math test scores and a 52% increase in ELA test scores. Before coming to King Center Charter School I was a preschool teacher in the city of Rochester. I planned everyday for two half day classes of students with a wide range of abilities and needs, both academically and socially. I collaborated daily with my teaching assistant and my students’ service providers to find the best ways to meet their IEP goals.
As of the 2012-2013 school year New York State has adopted the new Common Core Standards. These standards are more rigorous and are meant to get students college and career ready starting as early as Kindergarten. I have been implementing the CCS for over two years in my classroom and have a thorough knowledge of where the state expects students to be and the tools to get them there.
I have a New York State certification in Early Childhood (Birth through 2nd), Childhood (1st-6th), and Special Education. I currently teach 1st grade and have substitute teaching experience in all elementary grades.
I have spent the last 3 years teaching first grade. Phonics is a key component in early literacy. In my classroom we focus on one or two different phonics skills each week. I develop lesson plans and activities around these skills for my classroom centers. One example is using Reading A-Z decodable books that match up with the week's skill. We will practice making the new sounds and reading words as a whole class and then after echo reading the book, students will go through and highlight all the words with that vowel sound, blend, vowel team, etc. They keep these books in their book boxes so the skills can be practiced continually throughout the year.
I have my Masters Degree in Special Education and have worked at a school for students with special needs. I have attended CSE meetings for my students and worked on developing IEPs and obtainable goals for them.
