Hi there! Welcome to my site. I am a NYS certified Biology teacher. I have been teaching science in various forms since 2010 and tutoring since the beginning of 2012. Since March of 2013 I have been working with special education and special needs students of all ages and subjects.

My teaching and tutoring experience includes algebra, microbiology, biology, earth science and anatomy and physiology. I've tutored many students in those subjects as well as taught them on the middle school, high school and college level.

I'm currently working with students who have Autism. My experience comes from working in classrooms with kids of all ages and abilities, spanning the broad range of the autistic spectrum. In addition to hands on experience I've taken a number of formal trainings to understand and work better with the kids' autistic abilities.

I like to get to know my students, what their learning styles are, how they learn and study best and what their goals are to really complete the tutoring sessions. It's important to personalize the experience. Finding out how you understand material and what kind of connections we can make to help you remember the material is one of my key goals.

I've been fingerprinted by NYS, went through the child abuse seminar, SAVE seminar, mandated reporter and autism training. I have certifications in Earth Science and Living Environment.

I really enjoy working with all of my students. Your success is my job. I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Autism

I have over a year of experience with individuals on the autistic spectrum. Working in classrooms of ages 5 to 21, I have experience creating a sensory-safe environment, working with the individuals likes and dislikes, strengthening their skills and helping them move forward into areas that challenge them. Using schedules, "first-then" methods, building routine and introducing them to change, breaking their work down into smaller chunks, and praising their successes have worked for me in the past. The most important strategy of course is getting to know each individual. Individuals on the spectrum can be so different and what might work for one might not for the other so it's important to get to know the person and see what works.

Biology

I am currently going to school to be a Biology teacher. I have a few years of experience in grad school for biology and have taught microbiology at the college level for the last two years. I have a lot of techniques to help you learn all you need to learn about the living environment!!

Genetics

I have teaching experience at the middle, high school and community college level in Genetics. I have also taken graduate classes in genetics, their role in diseases and health, mutations and microbial genetics.

Geology

I have an undergraduate degree in Geology. In college I learned a lot about all aspects of geology, including geography and earth science. I also participated in research in geophysics and paleontology. At the grad level, I studied vertebrate paleontology and conducted research in that subject as well.

Microbiology

I am well qualified to tutor in microbiology. I have over fours years experience working in a quality control lab where I did a variety of microbial testing. I took graduate courses in microbiology and conducted a research project on the antibiotic resistance of E. coli specimens from run-off of a conventional dairy farm as compared to run-off from an organic dairy farm. Currently, I teach microbiology at the community college level. I prepare my students in aseptic technique, a variety of stains, plating and sampling techniques, autoclaving, materials preparation, biosafety, and bacterial transformations.

Study Skills

During my student teaching, substitute teaching and tutoring experience I have taught students the importance of learning different study skills and finding the skills that help them succeed. When it comes to test preparation there are a variety of methods you can use and when taking notes or learning vocabulary systems like Cornell Notes or Anchor Words can bridge learning and multiple intelligences.

DEDICATED — Kate helped my daughter with earth science this year. She seemed to connect very well with my daughter and that is half the battle when getting help for your child. She was very well organized in her approach and even went above and beyond to try to understand how my daughter learns. She adjusted her methods to get thru to my daughter and was very patient in understanding my daughters questions. S ...
