I am a graduate of Swarthmore College (Class of 2010, Phi Beta Kappa) and I just spent a wonderful year at a private school teaching English, poetry, grammar, and Latin to children ages 7-15. This experience introduced me to the joys and challenges of elementary and high school education. This year as I begin a graduate program at the CUNY Graduate Center, I hope to continue to work with children and adults, using the teaching knowledge I gathered in the classroom to help my students achieve their goals.
My areas of expertise fall into two major categories.
1. Latin/Classics: I will work with children and adults to improve their facility with the vocabulary, grammar, and literature of ancient Rome. I have experience crafting a curriculum that integrates grammar study, reading comprehension and historical background. My particular area of expertise here is the literature of the Republic and Augustan period (Catullus, Horace, Ovid, and Vergil). I am happy to work with complete beginners as well as those high school students taking the Latin AP. Additionally, I will help graduate students prepare for a reading exam in Latin.
2. English: My experience in this area is wide- ranging. I have worked with children to improve reading comprehension, writing facility (handwriting and sentence structure), vocabulary, and enjoyment of creative writing. I have created curricula for children ages 7-10 centered around poetry and poetic devices and can take credit for getting a small group of second graders obsessed with Edgar Allen Poe. I will help students of all ages get more out of the books and poems they read and to write stronger essays.
Finally, I am an experienced copy editor and editor. I co-run a small poetry press, work as a copy editor for the 1914-1918: An Online Encyclopedia of World War One, and have worked with various authors to edit projects that range from articles to book length. I will work with adults to envision, structure, and edit longer-form writing projects.
Above all, I am a compassionate listener and a sympathetic teacher. No matter what your age, skill level or goal I will work with you to find a way to get the most out of your tutoring sessions.
I am a life-long vegetarian and have been vegan for a year and a half. I will use my personal experience to help those looking to transition into an animal product free lifestyle. I have experience creating menus, balancing nutritional needs, and experimenting with fun ways to make non-vegetarian/vegan foods without animal products.
I have experience teaching children ages 7-10 at a school in Westport, CT. I have developed year-long curricula in English, creating worksheets and classroom activities, and implementing these in a way that is both educational and fun.
I have been a student for most of my life and I have been able to develop a strong personal system for completing work. In addition, I have experience as an English teacher working with students to assess blocks to homework completing and to find ways for students to get the most out of the work they do outside of school.
