I have a PhD in English Literature and over 15 years experience teaching college literature and writing courses; additionally, I have worked as a college writing tutor for undergraduate and graduate students on an array of topics. I enjoy teaching in a classroom setting, but love working one-on-one even more. I find it satisfying to work closely with individual students and witness their growing confidence and abilities as writers.
Because of my extensive experience, I have a real understanding of how challenging writing is for many; I also know how important it is to be able to communicate successfully through writing in school...and life. My goal is to help students realize their capabilities as writers and to focus on overcoming the various obstacles, including problematic writing patterns and habits, that prevent them from composing effective, stand-out written material. I met Shelly quickly for one time, but she made a difference in my life. My paper was due in a few days so it was my fault that I contacted her at the last minute. She read my master's paper and she put me on the right track by guiding me to pick up a clear and straightforward thesis. Not only that, she followed up on my work with a plan for my paper even though she knew that I couldn't schedule any more classes with her. She is a true educator. Most importantly, she is a human - she understands what a working parent goes through when he/she goes back to school to better his/her life. Shelly is a genuine teacher. I highly recommend her.
I am new to the tutoring world and didn't know what to expect or if it would even be worth it. I met with several tutors before picking one that I felt would best fit my needs. I am really lucky to have met Shelly and I've already seen my writing and grades improve in the month that I have worked with her. She is always willing and ready to work on anything that I bring to her. Instead of doing my work for me, she teaches me how I should do it -- so it is a real learning experience. She also brings handouts to help me address the areas that I want to improve in. If you send her what you want to work on ahead of time, she will also look through it before your session. I would recommend her for anyone who wants help in any aspects of English/Writing.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a classroom instructor, I have learned to address an audience in an engaging and concise manner on a regular basis. I am able to convey this to students as a teacher and as one who regularly has to speak publicly. Prior to my academic career, I worked in media relations and regularly took part in television and radio interviews.
I have a PhD in English Literature and taught college writing (and literature) classes for over ten years. Currently, I work as an in-house writing tutor for undergraduate and graduate students at St. Joseph's college in Brooklyn, but enjoy working one-one-one with students of all ages. Additionally, I volunteer as a book group organizer at an elementary school, helping 4th and 5th grade students read and analyze books with the aim to help them become stronger critical readers--and to become as passionate about books as I am!
