Are you a math and science ace who struggles with the nuances of writing and reading comprehension? Could you use help bolstering your grades in English or Language Arts classes? Do you intend to pursue a reading and writing intensive career after you graduate? Is English your second language? If so, as a tutor with a strong English specialization, I can help you!

I earned my associate of science in recording arts from Full Sail; my associate of arts from the Honors Institute at Hillsborough Community College, where I earned a prestigious Outstanding Delegate award at the Harvard National Model United Nations; and my bachelor of arts in English literature, magna cum laude, from the University of South Florida, where I was invited to participate in two English Honors Seminars, completed an honors thesis in literature, and made the dean's list. I also worked at Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions as an SAT/PSAT instructor/tutor and an ESL (English as a Second Language) instructor.

Reading and writing are staples of nearly every field of study. Improving your ability to write and to read critically will inevitably improve your grades all-around. I can help students understand and analyze assigned literature, improve their book reports, essays, and writing assignments, boost their PSAT/SAT verbal reasoning and writing scores, or simply teach them vocabulary and the rules of grammar, usage, and style. I will work with students and their parents to design effective and engaging curricula that are based on the needs of the student.

While I earned my degrees, I worked extensively as a recording engineer and as a professional musician. I have played on or engineered albums by members of Porcupine Tree, Feeder, and Luna Sea for labels like King Records (Japan) and Equal Vision. If you want to learn to play bass guitar, brush up on your theory and technique, or improve your ear, I can help you too! My method of teaching bass is simple and effective. I teach some scales, theory, and technique exercises, but I stress that these means serve an end: teaching you the songs and styles you want to learn to play.

I am available to tutor throughout the NYC Metro area, and my schedule is flexible. I hope to work with you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Music Production

I was salutatorian of my 2002 Full Sail Recording Arts Class. Since 2003, I have worked as an engineer and producer at Ron Rose Productions Tampa (5 years on the broadcast / audio post side of engineering) and Red Room Recorders (3 years on the music side). I have received credits on albums by John Wesley (guitarist of Porcupine Tree), Tallhart (Equal Vision Records), and Muddy Apes (King Records Japan). I am extensively knowledgeable about Pro Tools, tracking, editing, mixing, signal flow, and all types of recording equipment and practices.

SAT Writing

Did you know that two of the quickest and easiest ways to boost your SAT writing score are to learn to eliminate wordiness and to minimize passive sentence constructions? Did you know that there are simple rules governing the placement of commas and semicolons?

I will teach you these skills and others, like how to select the clearest transitions and how to maintain parallel structure in sentences, which will not only improve your SAT writing scores now, but will stay with you throughout your academic career.

Study Skills

My academic resume attests to the quality of my study skills. While earning my Bachelor of Arts at the University of South Florida, I completed 2 English Honors Seminars and an Honors English Thesis for a faculty committee. I also worked as a notetaker for disabled students at the Honors Institute of Hillsborough Community College and as an SAT and ESL Instructor at Kaplan. I can help students study textbooks and other class materials effectively and efficiently by prioritizing information and retaining key concepts.
