Are you a high school student working to pass the Regents? A parent whose 3rd-grader could use help in reading? Want to ace that AP class, or improve your writing?

I give students that extra support needed to succeed. Students and parents contact me about getting help in writing skills and reading comprehension. In addition to helping students with their individual classes, I do test prep for the following exams: SAT, SAT II, ACT, Regents, AP, SHSAT, and ISEE.

I work with students of all ages toward making the material more manageable by presenting new information in a clear way, constantly reviewing and practicing in order to reinforce concepts. Students of mine are shown how to most effectively study, so that time is not wasted. I work with native speakers and English Language Learners alike.

I trained as a teacher at Columbia University, and am currently certified by the State of New York. I have a B.A. in History from SUNY-Binghamton. Shoot me an email if you're interested in setting up a time to meet. Let's get started!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I've worked as an American History teacher in the New York City public school system. I love making this country's past come to life for students. History can be challenging, but together we'll make it manageable and engaging.

English

Students need proficiency in reading, writing, and note-taking in order to succeed in any subject. As a certified teacher, I've worked to make fiction and nonfiction reading accessible for all students. Using a variety of reading and comprehension strategies, we systematically work on ways to hone writing skills.

ISEE

Looking to get into a selective high school or middle school? As a certified teacher, I have instructed students in every skill that the ISEE and SSAT test: vocabulary, verbal and quantitative reasoning, math, reading, and writing. I train my students to use strategies specific to each test to maximize their score.

Reading

Reading is so critical to success in any academic subject, but even more important, it's needed to be able to engage with the world. Reading can be a joy in a child's life, but it can often feel intimidating. I work with students of all ages to make reading exciting, entertaining, and enlightening.

Regents

As a public school teacher in New York, I am experienced in training students to succeed on the Regents.

SAT Reading

As a literacy instructor and test prep tutor, I work to make fiction and nonfiction reading accessible for students. Using a variety of reading and comprehension strategies, students see progress unfold as they prepare for their test.

Social Studies

I trained in history at SUNY Binghamton, then in the teaching of social studies (grades 7-12) at Columbia. I currently teach a range of subjects in the social studies, including world history, American history, economics, and civics.

SSAT

Looking to get into a selective high school or middle school? As a certified teacher, I have instructed students in every skill that the ISEE and SSAT test: vocabulary, verbal and quantitative reasoning, math, reading, and writing. I train my students to use strategies specific to each test to maximize their score.

Study Skills

Effective studying is the key to getting the most from your time. We use flashcards, worksheets, practice exercises, and often games so that my students really "own" the material they need to know. These techniques I've honed while working as a teacher in the New York City public school system.

World History

I have taught World History in the New York City public school system. World History can be intimidating because of the sheer amount of information, but I make new material accessible for students, and constantly reinforce old topics and skills so that any student can succeed in their class.

Patient and Inspiring — Jonathan is great! He can coax my teenage high school sophomore daughter out of her grumpy "I don't need a tutor" mode, to being really excited about her tutoring sessions in geometry and earth science so much so that she will also discuss her other subjects, such as the short story she had to write for English. It is comforting to know that your child trusts her teacher/tutor and that there is an ...
