Hi, I'm Phil, a professional artist, designer, and language teacher. I have been tutoring students in languages and studio art since graduating from Columbia University in 2009, where I earned a double degree in Visual Arts, and the Philosophy of Language.
My classroom teaching experience goes back to 2009, when I taught ESL classes full-time in Budapest, Hungary. On the side, I also did a lot of tutoring in drawing, painting, and Russian. After Budapest, I taught ESL full-time here in New York for three years before striking out on my own as a freelance designer and commission portrait painter. Nowadays, I live and work in Brooklyn, where I split my time between as many projects as I can take on in good conscience.
After art and grammar, my passion in life is teaching. Although my own education has been fairly formal and classically-oriented, I delight in making the material personal and applicable to every student's style and needs. The depth and breadth of my experience teaching in New York and abroad allow me the rigor, but also the flexibility, to give students the tools they need to reach their goals.
For the past several years, I have augmented my income with freelance design work, including heavy use of Adobe InDesign for formatting and layout.
As a professional artist and part-time designer, I have knowledge of Adobe Software from two very different but complementary viewpoints. As a tutor, I have been teaching students privately in the arts for over five years, and welcome each new opportunity to explore and share this field.
I've been drawing all my life. In addition to various life drawing classes over the years, my undergraduate degree is in Studio Art. I also have experience tutoring landscape, still-life, and figure drawing one on one with excellent results.
I have four years of ESL teaching experience both here in New York and overseas. Although I specialize in grammar, pronunciation, and academic writing skills, I have also taught a lot of test prep, business English, and many other subjects. My students range from children to retirees, beginner to academic, large groups to individuals.
I started studying Hungarian in college, where, as the foremost student in the class, I led weekly study groups in my dormitory to help the other students keep up in class. After college, I lived in Budapest for a year and a half, where I learned to speak with proficiency. As a former student of linguistics, and a student of the language myself, I have a keen understanding of the grammar and structure of the language that most native speakers simply never think about. As a result, I am strongly qualified to tutor a student in basic Hungarian, where most of the structures and grammar are learned.
Painting is my profession. I work mostly as a commission portrait painter, in oils, and my qualifications go back to college, where I got my degree in Studio Art with painting as my speciality. I have a wealth of experience in Baroque-style still life painting and in portraiture, and tutored students in both of these subjects while living in Hungary. In Ireland, I also tutored landscape painting.
I am a native speaker of Russian, and have experience tutoring students in basic Russian while living in Hungary. As a former linguistics student, with a vast knowledge of comparative grammar, and as a former professional ESL teacher, I am strongly qualified not only in the theory of language, but also in pedagogical techniques unique to language-learning. This applies doubly to any language that I have native fluency in.
I have been tutoring students in academic writing since college at Columbia University, when I took jobs editing essays in philosophy. Since then, my students have increased to encompass a range of academic material and writing styles. I have helped students get into the colleges they want to, write demanding papers, and find their own voices in the challenging, but rewarding world of academia.
