My main professional interests are teaching and language. I have a degree in linguistics and know Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Luganda, and American Sign Language. I have taught English in Africa, Europe, South America, and the US (Pittsburgh and NYC) to students of widely varying proficiencies and nationalities. My clients come mainly from disciplines in academia and medicine, but also include executives, software developers, clothing designers, salespeople, a housekeeping crew, members of the Consulate of Ecuador to NY, engineers at a major firm, underprivileged women at a non-profit providing job readiness training, and families in the home.
For international clients, I offer English lessons using immersion techniques to elicit language relevant to you and help you make good, practical use of it. I provide TOEFL/IELTS preparation and edit professional and academic writing in conjunction with tutorials in PowerPoint and Word as needed. Finally, I can assist you with public speaking for lectures, presentations, peer reviews and oral dissertation defenses, as well as accent modification for clearer speech in person and on the phone. My methods as a speech coach are based on principles of phonetics and phonology in which I identify patterns in clients’ accents that cause communication barriers with native speakers and then design ways of modifying them. This all follows from a particular rubric, which I will provide to you after I perform your initial assessment.
I have also had significant experiences teaching students with special needs. I created verbalization techniques for a college student with cerebral palsy and paraplegia to use during test taking scenarios in history and algebra. Later, as a special needs teacher in Uganda, I worked to support the literacy, math, and life skills of students with learning delays/disabilities including dyslexia and autism spectrum disorders. Most recently, while teaching for the Pittsburgh Public Schools, I collaborated with special education teachers to create individual education plans for English students with further learning support needs. In addition, I have substitute taught K-8 math and science. For clients seeking assistance for any student including those with special needs, I can offer help with study skills, test-taking skills, and tutoring in math, science, essay composition, Spanish, and Italian.
In the event that you need to postpone, I kindly request 24 hours notice to schedule a makeup session.
I hold myself to a high professional standard and will bring that same energy to my work with you.
