I have taught statistics at the college level. I have found great joy working one-on-one with students I've taught, as well as students I have mentored through graduate studies. I enjoy helping people grasp the ideas behind their schoolwork.
I believe in the "teach a man how to fish" approach. I want students to be able to grasp the concepts, not just memorize facts.
Many students may be more engaged by different modes of instruction - a "visual learner" would have a hard time learning via an oral lecture. I think it's best to learn from the student how they optimally comprehend subject matter, so they can adopt strategies that work for them.
I’m involved in the design and implementation an intervention program that assists college students with autism and other invisible disabilities (such as ADHD or learning disorders). We use peer mentoring to provide scaffolding that helps the students navigate the transition to college, offer support to help them achieve academic success, and ensure a smooth progression to the workforce. This is a CUNY-wide initiative termed Project R.E.A.C.H.
We note the need for students to become independent. The laws change with entrance to college, and this means students have to advocate for their own accommodations. This tangible goal is just a start, as gaining a sense of self-determination is necessary to gain employment. Thus, we have weekly group mentor sessions focusing on self-advocacy and leadership. One way we are moving towards these goals is to have students work on public speaking skills. We help them understand how to prepare and deliver speeches, including how to manage public speaking anxiety. They will be delivering a final speech at the end of the semester to an audience of 150 students and faculty. It is rewarding to see them discover their voices.
In addition to the group sessions, mentors also meet with the students one-on-one, to address struggles they may have with coursework. Many have problems with organization, especially breaking larger tasks into more manageable ones. We work closely with the students, actively monitoring their progress, and making sure they are able to effectively advance through college and into the workforce.
