Dear Parents and Students,

My name is Matia (pronounced May-sha) and I hope you may be interested in working with me! My specialty is tutoring reading and writing. I have a Master's degree in education from an Oregon University and a Master's degree in writing from Columbia. I work now as an editor and reviewer of children's books, which I love to do, but I miss interacting with students as I did when I lived in Oregon. I especially like to work with students who feel that they are not always connecting to the books that they are reading, because often it's just a matter of finding the RIGHT book to spark up a love for stories. I'm always delighted to recommend books (whether it's a picture book, early-reader, graphic novel, middle grade novel, or young adult novel) based on an individual's interests and tastes. In fact, I can even supply some reading materials through my work as an editor! I also believe that reading and writing go hand-in-hand; reflecting on reading and relating it back to one's own life through writing is an important part of developing a relationship with words, characters, and stories.

I cater my tutoring to support each student's individual needs. In the past, I have worked with middle school students, high school alternative school students, and even homeless students in transition. Through these experiences, I have developed a flexible and creative teaching approach that builds student self-confidence, while achieving results. Thank you and I look forward to meeting you!

All the best,

Matia

Through my place of employment, I have multiple teaching tools available to me, including early reader books that feature bright pictures and simple texts designed to hook beginning readers based on their individual interests.
