College Counseling

As a professional writer with an MFA in creative writing, I bring plenty of experience when helping students prepare their college application essays. For two years while getting my master's, I taught Freshman Composition, laying out the guidelines for effective essay structure. I help students produce essays that don't rely on generalizations or cliches, but dig deeply into their own ideas and experience. Discovering an exciting theme to develop, and working until the essay is error-free and polished, is a satisfying and obtainable objective.

SAT Writing

I tested in the 97th percentile in Verbal on the GRE (the SAT for graduate school) and in the 94th percentile for the Subject test, in English. My writing and literature knowledge is exceptional, and I also have a good understanding of the strategy behind the SAT (and GRE). I believe I can give a very strong foundation with which to approach the writing section of the test.

Writing

I am a published writer (New York Times, Toronto Globe and Mail, Time Out New York, and many other places) and also a teacher of writing. I have an MFA in fiction and am constantly involved with writing -- helping students to improve theirs, or working on my own. Teaching writing has been a true love of mine, and I have found many techniques to help students feel more engaged by their subjects and more confident in their writing skills. More than anything I try to transfer my passion for working with words, and the deep meaning writing can have for you if you find the patience to conquer its complexities.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
