I'm a committed and attentive tutor. I'm working on my PhD dissertation in philosophy, and in the meantime I love working with students. Learning can be hard work, but I work hard to make it fun for you.
I've been a teacher for over 20 years, starting with teaching karate classes as a teenager, and going on to include English classes, SAT and other test prep classes, and college philosophy classes. I've met students of all ages and abilities and I know how to tailor my lessons to the student's needs.
My specialties are in reading, writing, and standardized test prep. I also have a wide range of interests and can help students in many areas.
In teaching reading and writing, I focus on basic mechanics and clarity. I believe that once the foundation is strong we can build up to more complicated skills.
As a tutor for the SAT, GRE, and other exams, I help students understand the mechanics of standardized tests and identify the types of questions they are likely to face. We drill the most common types of problems, focusing on the form as much as on the content so that students will be ready for anything that comes along.
My combined score on the GRE is high in the 99%. But teaching is more than knowing the material; it requires the ability to communicate both the material and the right attitude towards studying. That's my real specialty.
Studying with me will be very good for you. I hope to meet you soon.
I have an MA and additional graduate work in Philosophy, which covers Classical Greek thought. I've taught classes which included material from Homer, Pre-Socratic philosophers such as Anaximander and Heraclitus, Plato, Aristotle and others. I've written graduate papers focused on the plays of Aeschylus and Sophocles. And I've read many others. While not usually counted in Classics Departments in the West, I'm also well versed in the Chinese Classics.
I was a TA for "Intro to Deductive Logic" at the University of Hawaii. I passed "Advanced Logic" at the University of Hawaii with an excellent grade, which is why they made me the TA. I am familiar with several systems of symbolic notation and I have additional experience teaching critical thinking and informal logic.
