As a portrait photographer, I feel that I am an insightful communicator, possessing a special talent that makes diverse subjects feel comfortable in front of the lens, as well as, behind the lens. I am a freelance and fine art photographer in NYC. I specialize in portrait photography. I have years of experience in the classroom working with students of all ages, and I enjoy inspiring my students in their own projects.
WRITING STUDENTS, please, look two paragraphs down about my writing qualifications and for a more elaborate synopsis in my writing skills section of my profile.
I graduated from New York University with a BFA from the Tisch School of the Arts in 1990. Over the years, I have been published in The New York Times, The Courrier-International, The British Journal of Photography, Max Magazine and other magazines.
My eight-year project on exotic dancers culminated in the book "Lapdancer" (PowerHouse Books, 2003), an intimate photographic and text account of the world of strip clubs. In 2010, my second book of photographs, “Sete: 2010, Juliana Beasley”, a collection of portraits taken during a residency in the south of France was published with Images En Maoeuvres.
My creative nonfiction writing is a part of my creative process, and I am a highly skilled writing coach and editor. I know this looks like a photography profile, but if you are looking for someone to help you get through your thesis papers, please, go to my "writing skills" section and read about my prior experiences. I love to write! And I love to teach writing!
My work has been shown in galleries and festivals both here and abroad. I am also the winner of various awards including the PX3 Human Condition Awards and the Camera Club of New York. In 2007, I was nominated for the prestigious International Center of Photography (ICP) Infinity Awards. In 2009, I won two grants, the prestigious Aaron Siskind Award and the New Jersey Council of the Arts. My work is a permanent part of the photography collections at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and Le Musee de la Photographie in Charleroi, Belgium.
I am also highly skilled in both Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop and am happy to teach beginners as well as intermediate students. I have been working with Photoshop for almost nine years and in Lightroom for about two years. I love to make both of these programs accessible and fun to learn for my students. I also work as a retoucher for private clients working in both analog and digital formats.
Feel free to look at my gallery of personal work, student reviews, and my blog.
Please, note that WyzAnt will only allow me to upload images to my profile gallery that are cropped to their specifications. Therefore, you are not seeing the whole photograph, but a cropped version. If you get in touch with me, I will be more than happy to send you the full framed versions of both my analog and digital photography. I will be posting a video post in the near future so, you can see some of my photographs from one of my published books.
Thanks for stopping by!
