ACT English

Given that grammar is often poorly taught in high schools, students often find the ACT English section to be difficult. To help prepare my students, I do an initial review of the grammar rules tested on the ACT. I then work with my students to apply those grammar rules to practice problems. I also teach test strategies that help my students improve their accuracy and speed when answering ACT English problems.

Let me help you or your loved one optimally prepare for the ACT English exam.

ACT Math

Standardized exams are so key given the large number of applications colleges receive; standardized exam score requirements are a relatively inexpensive method of rationing increasingly scarce freshman slots. Having taken many standardized exams in my life, I understand how important it is to do well on these exams. And I know that being well-versed in the subject matter being tested is not enough; to do well the exam taker must also be well-versed in test-taking strategies. I've researched and am familiar with several test taking strategies that have served me well throughout my academic pursuits (I hold an undergraduate degree from an Ivy League university, a graduate degree, and I am currently working on a graduate degree in Statistics). Let me help your loved one be optimally prepared for the ACT!

ACT Reading

I’ve taken many standardized tests in my life and I've have scored well on reading comprehension exams throughout my life. In addition to having been taught by some very talented instructors, I have a great passion for the written work, and I am a voracious reader. This is balance with the knowledge that having high reading comprehension is not enough; to do well on the ACT reading section, the exam taker must also be well-versed in test-taking strategies. I am familiar with several test taking strategies that have served me well (I hold an undergraduate degree from an Ivy League university, a graduate degree, and I am currently working on a graduate degree in Statistics).

My tutoring style in reading is to review various types of writing with my student, ask questions which refer to various aspects of that writing to identify the student's individual skill gaps, and to share a few strategies for breaking the document into digestible pieces and honing in on the most key aspects of what the document is attempting to convey. I’d be happy to help your loved one prepare for the ACT reading section.

Economics

I have completed several economics courses at the undergraduate and graduate level. When as part of my first master's degree, I earned a concentration in economics, so I completed quite a bit of coursework in the field of study. I excelled at my studies of intermediate microeconomics, intermediate macroeconomics, and econometrics.

Elementary Math

Over the years I have tutored numerous children in my family and children of my friends and coworkers in elementary math. I appreciate how important it is to get the math fundamentals down (arithmetic, fractions, decimals, and solving problems with one unknown). It is the math that we all use the most frequently in our everyday lives, after all!

I've been an enthusiastic student of math since very early in my life and I've never lost the passion. Throughout my undergraduate and graduate studies I have excelled at math and am currently pursuing an MS in statistics, a branch of math.

I'd be happy to assist your child in his/her pursuit to master elementary math.

English

I have many years of experience serving as an English tutor mostly to adults. I've tutored my non-native English speaking relatives for years and have a strong track record of helping them improved their ability to write and speak English fluently. I am particularly effective at helping students overcome language barriers (ESL) for better communication, strengthening writing skills, and working towards independence. Please consider me if you are looking for a friendly, experienced, and patient tutor, whether your needs are unconventional or quite simple. I am comfortable with any age, gender, or background.

ESL/ESOL

Being a second generation American, I saw first-hand how difficult English can be to learn through observing the experiences of my relatives. I've been providing ESL tutoring for so long to my relatives and their friends, that I only just recently identified ESL-instruction as something I was positioned to do for work. In addition I have spent many years perfecting my own English speaking, reading, and writing skills during my many years of formal education (1 undergraduate, and 2 graduate degrees). For those students pursuing careers with field-specific terminology, such as medicine, technology or science, I can help you build a vocabulary that will keep you confident and competent in your industry. Let me help you establish a solid foundation of the basics and move quickly toward fluency.

General Computer

Computers make the world go round these days! I've been using computers in professional, academic, and personal settings for many years. Earlier in my career I worked at small nonprofit organizations where I took on managing various aspects of information technology. As a result I am very knowledgeable about basic software and hardware computer issues. I'd be happy to share that knowledge and help you master the computer skills with which you would like help.

Grammar

My qualifications to teach this subject come from both my academic and professional background. I've earned an undergraduate degree from an Ivy League institution, a Master’s degree, and I am currently working on a second Masters. Throughout my education, my teachers and professors were diligent in their requirements that their students learn and adhere to the rules of English grammar, of which there are many! I have also worked for years in professional environments where I was required to write technical documents, emails to high level staff, and reports which had to be free of grammatical errors. As such, I have extensive experience in the real world application of the rules of English grammar.

Over the years I have proofread documents and provided informal lessons in English grammar to non-native English relatives. I would be happy to assist you in your effort to learn and integrate detailed knowledge of English grammar in your daily communications.

Microsoft Excel

I've been using Microsoft Excel in both office and academic settings since the 1990s and am considered a power user. I've used Excel for a wide variety of tasks from summarizing raw data in tables (pivot and simple ones of my design), creating "smart" forms using conditional formatting and the spreadsheet's numerous formulas, to creating attractive charts. Over the years I have tutored numerous coworkers in learning to use Excel's many functions.

Microsoft Outlook

I've been using Microsoft Outlook for at least 8 years in an office setting. Every organization I have worked with since 2004 has used Outlook not only as their email program, but also to manage calendars, set meetings, and more recently manage conference room reservations. I have also used Outlook to help managers that I have supported in the past to manage their email and calendars.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I've been using Microsoft PowerPoint in an office setting for over a decade and am considered a power user. I've used my extensive knowledge of PowerPoint to not only create my own high-impact presentations that have contained graphics, images, charts, and tables of my own making, but I've also supported others (supervisors, coworkers, fellow students) in their development of PowerPoint presentations.

Microsoft Windows

I've been a PC user and therefore a user of Microsoft Windows for over a decade. Also I have tended to work in offices where PCs with Windows operating systems were used by the staff during the last decade, so I am very comfortable with the Windows environment. I have also helped older staff at various employers learn to get comfortable with the windows environment.

Microsoft Word

I've been using Microsoft Word in both office and academic settings since the 1990s and am considered a power user. I've used Word to complete a wide variety of tasks including creating business letters, writing reports for both work and class, generating mail merged documents, to writing business memos. I've coached numerous coworkers, supervisors, and classmates on the use of Word over the years and enjoy sharing that knowledge with others.

I have tutored many relatives, relatives of friends, and friends of coworkers in math subjects that make up prealgebra. I have extensive experience teaching adolescents how to solve complex word problems, basic geometry problems, and those where utilizing related rates, ratios, and solving a problem with an unknown are required.

I've been an enthusiastic student of math since very early in my life and I've never lost the passion. Throughout my undergraduate and graduate studies I have excelled at math and am currently pursuing an MS in statistics, a branch of math.

I'd be happy to assist you or your relative in his/her pursuit to master prealgebra!

Proofreading

My proofreading skills were acquired through long hours of practice. Early in my career I was called upon to proofread the writing of economists at a Washington DC think tank. I also honed my proofreading skills during my many years of formal education at Ivy League and private universities, where I was expected to write many research papers which had to be free of grammatical and spelling errors. I have also spent the last 10 years working in positions were I have been required do a great deal of writing on a daily basis; I methodically check my writing to ensure it is error-free. I’ve also become the go-to person amongst my friends for proofreading their writing.
Tired of struggling with that piece of writing that you’ve looked at so many times you aren’t sure if you are seeing the actual words which are written on the page or just the words you intended to write? Let me assist you create a superior document.

Public Speaking

I am an experienced public speaker who was once terrified of speaking to more than 2 people at a time. Oh, how far I have come! For the past 10 years I have worked in professional settings where I have been required to deliver presentations. Through a combination of seeking professional development training and trial-by-fire at work, I have learned techniques for successfully delivering presentations and facilitating meetings. I am now regarded as a gifted public speaker among my coworkers and classmates.

My tutoring approach in public speaking involves practice, practice, and more practice. I'll start with an initial conversation about your concerns about your public speaking style. I'll have you deliver a short speech, which I will observe. I will give you some feedback on your speaking style and I will even demonstrate some public speaking techniques I've used. Let me share what I have learned with you and help you along your journey to becoming an outstanding public speaker!

In addition to having been taught by some very talented English literature teachers and professors, I have a great passion for the written work and am a voracious reader. For work and my studies, I often have to read dense journal articles which has helped me hone my reading comprehension. My tutoring style in reading is to review various types of writing with my student, ask questions which refer to various aspects of that writing to identify the student's individual skill gaps, and to share a few strategies for breaking the document into digestible pieces and honing in on the most key aspects of what the document is attempting to convey.

SAS

I have 5 years' experience using SAS to work with large data sets at the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. I learned to use SAS by taking several courses offered by the SAS Institute in NYC including SAS programming 1, 2, and 3; SAS SQL; and SAS Macros 1. I am also currently using SAS in my graduate statistics courses at Baruch.

SAT Math

Having taken many standardized exams in my life, I am well-versed in how to prepare for them. Being well-versed in the subject matter being tested is not enough; to do well the exam taker must use a variety of test-taking strategies.

I have learned several test taking strategies and as a result have done very well on standardized exams like the SAT. This has served me well throughout my academic pursuits; I hold an undergraduate degree from an Ivy League university, a graduate degree, and I am currently working on a graduate degree in Statistics. Let me help your loved one be optimally prepared for the math section of the SAT!

I’d be happy to help your loved one prepare for the SAT.

SAT Writing

My approach to test prep for the SAT writing exam is to first engage in an extensive review of the grammar rules tested on the SAT. After identifying areas where my student is struggling, I work with the student to learn the grammar rules and apply them to SAT practice problems.

I then introduce the student to test taking strategies to decrease the amount of time required to answer the main question types. My tutoring approach also includes reviewing guidelines for writing a strong essay and reviewing examples of essays that are written in the format the test makers prefer.

SPSS

I have been using SPSS since the late 1990s when I first learned to use it in a research course in graduate school. Since then, I have used SPSS at work and have used it to analyze a variety of data. More specifically, I have used SPSS to analyze survey data and administrative program data for program evaluation purposes. I've used SPSS to perform tests of statistical significance included paired t tests, Wilcoxon signed-ranks test and to model data using regression (linear and logistic).

STATA

I first learned to use STATA when I was taking a graduate level econometrics course at American University. I then used STATA extensively at work to engage in data analysis projects during my 7 years at the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. In my first few years with the DOHMH I used STATA exclusively to clean, manipulate, and perform analyses on large public health data sets including the Early Intervention program’s claims data sets which contained approximately 10 million records and over a hundred variables.

Statistics

I have both a deep passion for and extensive academic and professional qualifications which make me qualified to serve as a statistics tutor. I am currently pursuing a graduate degree in statistics and have completed an extensive list of coursework in statistics at both the undergraduate and the graduate level. I have also worked for the last 7 years as a data analyst and program evaluator that specializes in quantitative data analysis. As such I've had to teach supervisors and coworkers quite a bit of statistics so they could appreciate the methods I used to complete my various analyses. I've enjoyed that immensely and look forward to tutoring a new batch of students in statistics.

Study Skills

My approach to tutoring in study skills is to first review the list of classes my student is taking, and then to ascertain how much time she or he needs to review class material and work on assignments, and what she or he finds particularly difficult in each subject. I then review my student’s study habits: where they study, what distractions are present when she or he is trying to study, and what adjustments can be made to her or his study atmosphere to make it more suitable.

TOEFL

I assist my students with TOEFL preparation by using high-quality test materials (that I locate and provide for my students) which teach the necessary knowledge and skills to do well on the TOEFL. I also engage my students in interactive sessions meant to boost their comfort at expressing themselves in English and in understanding English, especially how it is spoken here in the U.S.

In addition to teaching the skills necessary to do well on the TOEFL, I teach my students aspects of speaking, reading, writing, and understanding English that will serve them well for the rest of their lives.

Writing

I have extensive experience crafting and a great passion for the written word. I've excelled at writing in both academic and professional settings. I've earned one undergraduate, one graduate, and I am currently pursuing a second graduate degree which have required me to master writing persuasive as well as expository essays and reports. I also have many years of experience writing white papers and data briefs as a data analyst in government agencies and think tanks.
