I started my university coursework in Latin, philosophy, and logic during my junior year of high school; after graduating early, I matriculated full-time to the University of Iowa and continued my studies in classical languages and philosophy (with an emphasis on formal logic) and begun also taking courses in linguistics (semantics and syntax in particular) and ancient civilizations.
I entered with sophomore standing and immediately took up a year-long teaching assistantship in elementary Latin I & II, a position which at that time only four other undergraduate students across all majors and departments held. It was at this time that I also began my role as the departmental tutor in Latin, for which I met with students desiring extra out-of-classroom assistance both one-on-one and in groups. Additionally, I tutored philosophy/logic in addition to Latin and Greek for the athletics department; I was the only non-graduate student to be so employed. I also tutored a wider variety of subjects (English, study skills, etc.) for an interdepartmental peer tutoring group.
All told, during my time as an undergraduate, I tutored for four different university departments, as well as privately; completed a year-long tutor training course; and, was recognized for my skill with an outstanding tutor award. In addition to my experience tutoring in an official capacity, I have tutored many students informally on various aspects of languages in general and of the English language in particular.
Informally, grammar (of languages in general and of the English language in particular) has been a fascination of mine my whole life. While in middle school, I frequented used book stores with a keen eye for old grammar books; it was then that I remember, rather fondly, first discovering paradigm charts. Formally, I continued my study of grammar while at the University of Iowa, eventually earning a degree in linguistics. My strengths are syntax and semantics, but I am versed also in phonology and phonetics, morphology, and historical linguistics.
I have studied Latin for over a decade, which I began at age 16 at The University of Iowa. I particularly enjoy the writing/compositional aspect of Latin. My favorite Latin courses while an undergraduate were on the poetry of Catullus and on the variations in style of different Latin authors like Cicero, Livy, and Caesar.
As an undergraduate, I studied and tutored others in their studies of the logic of both prepositional and predicate calculi. I am also generally familiar with the history and development of formal reasoning, beginning with Aristotle up to the logics of Frege and Russell.
As a tutor for New Dimensions in Learning, a study-help division of the University of Iowa, I completed a year-long course in tutoring theory and methodology, including how to impart good study habits to students.
