I'm Nataliya, and I've been a private tutor most of my adult life, since I took the SATs myself. I've continued to tutor because I love seeing a student reach that "aha" moment when they've solved some problem they'd been having trouble with. Tutoring, like all types of learning, is a medium for growth and self-improvement, which leads to a boost in confidence. And that's great for any person, especially a teenager. I love private tutoring because I'm able to give each student exactly what he/she needs - skipping the material they're strong on, and finding multiple ways to explain what it is they're having trouble with.
My subject areas span the range of anything from the JHS level entrance exams, such as the SHSAT, to high school level academic help in Math and English, and all sections of the SAT. My scores on the SAT were Critical Reading: 740, Writing: 760, Math: 720.
I currently teach SAT Critical Reading and SAT Writing at the City University of New York.
I'm from the NYC area, having grown up in Brooklyn most of my life. I love working with people from different backgrounds, and speak Spanish and Russian fluently.
I hope to meet your son or daughter soon, and help him/her meet his/her goals,
A little bit about me: I majored in Comparative Literature at Williams College (top-ranked). I'm a long-time SAT tutor, especially in the Critical Reading and Writing sections. I currently teach SAT Prep at City University of New York.
A little bit about me: I taught ESL for a number of years while living in Spain. I am also an English-language learner myself - I was born in Ukraine, and I grew up in Brooklyn - so I understand the difficulties of learning a second language firsthand.
SAT Writing is the heart of what I do. I've tutored many students in writing, focusing on grammar - as that is the essence of SAT Writing. A grammar nerd myself, I understand the rules of grammar inside-out, and enjoy breaking them down into easy-to-understand bites for my students. Students walk away with an enhanced understanding of grammar rules, which gets reflects in their higher test scores.
Here's a bit of my experience with Spanish: I learned Spanish and came to speak it fluently when I was living in Spain. I lived in Barcelona for 1 year, where I worked in Spanish and took classes at the local university in Spanish. The first year, I was doing a study abroad program in Madrid through Williams College, where I majored in Comparative Literature with a Specialization in Spanish.
I taught English as a second language in Spain for several years, focusing on pronunciation, as I noticed this was what most of my clients struggled with. I have formally studied Speech Pathology at the graduate level. I believe in a structured, step-by-step approach to changing one's speech, as this is a habit formed through years of speaking in one way. Therefore I make sure to check that a student has understood a sound/ aspect clearly before moving on to the next. And I review, to make sure earlier skills have not rusted, and that my client is progressing forward at a consistent pace.
