I have been an adult education teacher for over 20 years, offering tutelage and instruction in a variety of skills and subject areas including GED prep, computer literacy, motorcycling, bicycling, and American Sign Language. My eduction philosophy is simple: to communicate my love of the subject (or skill area) while being sensitive to the particular needs (academic and otherwise) of my students. ESL/ESOL

I have taught ESL (for adults) for many years, both at the Lado Institute in Washington, D.C., and at CAMBA, the Church Avenue Merchants Block Association in Brooklyn. I have worked with students from beginner to advanced levels, using the direct (or natural) method.

I am a native speaker of English, fluent in Spanish, conversant in French and at an intermediate level in American Sign Language. I have worked with students from many different language backgrounds including Spanish, French, Turkish, Arabic and Russian.

GED

I have had several years experience as program coordinator for an adult education program which focused on GED prep and computer literacy.

HTML

I have extensive web production experience as a developer, project manager, and information architect/UX designer for clients that have included The Weather Channel, Oppenheimer Funds, Cadillac and American Express.

I have extensive front- and back-end experience working in HTML, HTML5, DHTML, AJAX, CSS, Javascript, JQuery, PHP and MySQL.

Public Speaking

As a long-time teacher, I have a lot of experience in public speaking. In the academic setting the audience may be limited to a couple of dozen. However as a member of a mutual aid society, I regularly address much larger groups (as many as a hundred or more). And I also teach a number of skills classes (outdoors), which has its own set of challenges -- and opportunities. While I have no pretensions about an acting career I do appreciate that in pedagogy (or motivational speaking) a little theater goes a long way. And of course, always leave them wanting more...

Reading

I have had several years experience as an instructor and program coordinator for an adult education program, focused on Adult Basic Education, GED prep and computer literacy.

Sign Language

I am hearing, but I studied sign language for about a year at the Sign Language Center in Manhattan.

I am an intermediate level signer (I can hold a casual conversation), and am proficient in finger-spelling. I understand the various conceptual systems of ASL: fingerspelling, ideograms, idioms, qualifiers, use of space, basic grammar, etc. I was for a time one of the facilitators of the NYC ASL Meet-Ups and tutored many newcomers informally.

I am also conversant to fluent in English, Spanish and French, and have a deep appreciation of the similarities and differences between aural/oral and visual/manual languages.

TOEFL

I have taught ESL (for adults) for many years, using the direct (or natural) method. I am a native speaker of English, fluent in Spanish, conversant in French and at an intermediate level in American Sign Language. I have worked with students from many different language backgrounds including Spanish, French, Turkish, Arabic and Russian. Let me put my experience to work for you!

Web Design

I have over 15 years experience in web development for clients that have included The Weather Channel, Oppenheimer Funds, Cadillac and American Express.

I have extensive front- and back-end development experience working in HTML HTML5, DHTML, AJAX, CSS, Javascript, JQuery, PHP and MySQL.

Writing

I have quite a bit of experience as an ABE/GED teacher. In addition I have written and edited copy for advertising and corporate communications for many years.
