I have taught ESL (for adults) for many years, both at the Lado Institute in Washington, D.C., and at CAMBA, the Church Avenue Merchants Block Association in Brooklyn. I have worked with students from beginner to advanced levels, using the direct (or natural) method.
I am a native speaker of English, fluent in Spanish, conversant in French and at an intermediate level in American Sign Language. I have worked with students from many different language backgrounds including Spanish, French, Turkish, Arabic and Russian.
I have had several years experience as program coordinator for an adult education program which focused on GED prep and computer literacy.

I have taught WyzAnt students in PHP, and basic computer literacy to GED students. In teaching programming, I first quickly assess students level of [conceptual] understanding, which is usually the first hurdle. If I find that they have a grasp of the language's central metaphor, then we can go on to tackle the specific problem that is giving them trouble.
Sometimes that means sketching out (literally) objects and data flows. In other cases it is more helpful to draft an algorithm in pseudo-code. I.e., Writing out [on paper] the steps necessary to reach the desire result, without worrying about the syntax of the language.
Once the student's have a "map," writing the actual code is usually pretty straightforward. In other words, once you can see the forest, navigating through the trees is no big deal.
As a long-time teacher, I have a lot of experience in public speaking. In the academic setting the audience may be limited to a couple of dozen. However as a member of a mutual aid society, I regularly address much larger groups (as many as a hundred or more). And I also teach a number of skills classes (outdoors), which has its own set of challenges -- and opportunities. While I have no pretensions about an acting career I do appreciate that in pedagogy (or motivational speaking) a little theater goes a long way. And of course, always leave them wanting more...

I am hearing, but I studied sign language for about a year at the Sign Language Center in Manhattan.
I am an intermediate level signer (I can hold a casual conversation), and am proficient in finger-spelling. I understand the various conceptual systems of ASL: fingerspelling, ideograms, idioms, qualifiers, use of space, basic grammar, etc. I was for a time one of the facilitators of the NYC ASL Meet-Ups and tutored many newcomers informally.
I am also conversant to fluent in English, Spanish and French, and have a deep appreciation of the similarities and differences between aural/oral and visual/manual languages.
