My name is Will and I'm an actor/director/songwriter living in Brooklyn. I've been teaching basic guitar, music theory, and ear training to students of all ages for two years. I have also have experience teaching math and reading skills to kids with special needs, teaching Shakespeare to children with autism, and teaching improvisation to middle schoolers. My private tutoring experience lies mostly in literature, reading, and writing, but I am also proficient in math, history, philosophy, and basic science.
It's my belief that any person at any age can be interested in learning any subject if it's presented right. In my experience as a teacher and a director, I've found my main strength lies in recognizing the strengths and needs of the individual I'm working with, and tailoring the rehearsal or lesson accordingly.
I was born with a musical ear, which I developed early and used to teach myself how to play the guitar, piano, banjo, mandolin, and ukulele. I have since been trained in musical theory, jazz piano and jazz guitar, and have learned a variety of ear training exercises, which I now use often when I teach guitar. With hard work and repetition, I can teach guitar and piano students to understand and identify intervals, chords, and eventually entire chord progressions of songs.
I've been teaching basic guitar and music theory to students of all ages for two years. I myself have been trained in a number of styles, including jazz, folk, and rock. I specialize in combining guitar technique with music theory and ear training so my pupils can eventually learn to analyze and play any song by ear.
I've basically been writing songs as long as I can remember, but have only made a career of it in the last three years or so. I have performed at various venues around New York City. My particular style is acoustic folk, and samples of my work are available upon request. While I don't believe that anyone can teach someone else how to write a song, or how a song should be written, original music can be improved through close examination and discussion. My students will explore work by similar established artists to discover how lyrics and music can work independently and together to create a desired effect.
I received a BA in Drama from Kenyon College in 2010. I studied acting at the NHSI Theatre Arts program at Northwestern University, the British American Drama Academy in London, and the Williamstown Theatre Festival in Massachusetts. I have acted in shows and scene work at Columbia University and Atlantic Theater Company, and have performed in a number of off off Broadway productions. I have helped develop new works at New Dramatists, Naked Angels, Theatre Reconstruction Ensemble, VOICETheatre, and Do it live! in San Francisco, and have also directed pieces for Calliope Theatre Company, Nylon Fusion Collective, Hearth Gods, and the Dirty Blondes. I have extensive experience teaching improvisation to middle schoolers.
