I began tutoring last year working with a 5th grader who had fallen behind in writing. I have since tutored writing, reading comprehension, history, government/politics and some sciences. I have also taught organization and public speaking. My field of study was Political Communication.

My general method is based on the idea that what the student needs is to learn how to learn. I go over the basics with the student, such as proper grammar, outlining, speaking techniques, how to find information and questions to guide students to solutions (whether that be the answer to a question or how to write a paragraph better). My goal is for the student to gain academic independence.

When doing test prep, I work slightly differently, but with the same basic goal. I go over the kinds of questions that will be on the test, figure out the kinds of things that students will have to know and help them with test taking techniques.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

My field of study was Political Communication. I took classes on public speaking and it was an important aspect of many classes that did not deal directly with it.

Public speaking has two parts. First, the ability to organize your thoughts and present them coherently. Second is the ability to deliver in a clear and confident way. I teach the first part by starting with outlines to help visualize the process. The second part can only be learned by practice, aided by notes on performance.

Reading

There are two basic components when teaching reading. First is vocabulary and Second is understanding written English. While flash cards and the like can be very useful in learning vocabulary (and I encourage their use), I think it is equally important for students to encounter new words within context and to learn them from experience. Teaching written English is mostly going over the letters, the sounds they make and how they are used together as well as teaching punctuation in the same way.

Very patient! Good techniques. — My son has been really picking up his slack with Jacob as his tutor. He has been very patient with my son. When they first started my son was not pulling in the weight to learn and was too laid back. Now, he is getting the hang of things he is really eager to meet with Jacob. Jacob uses different techniques with my son when he notices that my son is losing interest or does not understand the lesso ...
