For my bachelors degree I graduated in 2005 with honors from the State University of New York College at Oneonta majoring in Secondary Education with a concentration in Social Studies and a minor in History. Since then I have tutored the SAT Math and Verbals sections, as well as K-12 reading and writing development, at the Huntington Learning Center and privately. I have also subject tutored social studies classes through public school systems and privately as well. In 2008 I served in the United States Peace Corps and spent over two years in Latin America learning Spanish and Mayan while teaching basic health and improving teacher pedagogy within assigned schools. I recently graduated with honors from New York University and now hold a Master's in Latin American and Caribbean Studies. While attending NYU, I was the Director of Community Service and Sustainability in the Graduate Student Government and created various educational outreach programs designed to increase the sustainability discourse within the NYU and NYC community. I also worked part-time through my department at NYU as a K-12 Outreach Coordinator and oversaw a NYC Teacher Residency Program. I would be happy to talk in detail about my experience upon request.
I have found that my true gift as an educator lies in my ability to inspire and relate to young people in a personalized setting. Chances are no matter what your child's interests, I probably share at least one with him/her. The greatest challenge of any educator is providing students with relevance in what they are learning. I take the time to understand my students and help them learn through their interests. Whether it be sports, video games, comic books, T.V. shows, movies, music, etc. I do my best to engage students with what they are interested in and make the material as relevant to their lives as possible. In short, I know how to make learning interesting and fun for students.
As a former Peace Corps Volunteer I have lived abroad and have many insights on how the world operates. As we move further into the 21st century, the necessity for young people living in the U.S. to be engaged in national and world affairs is critical. It does not matter if a student needs my help with SAT math tutoring or essay development, my overall goal as a teacher is to help my students become better critical thinkers. This will aid their navigation through the ever changing world as they reach adulthood and benefit them for the rest of their lives. The benefits of individual instruction should go beyond a standardized test score.
