Hey,

My name is Andrew and I love to teach.

I am 20 years old and a student at Haverford College; my potential majors are English and education. I recently took a year off from my studies to pursue a calling in public service and education with City Year New York, an organization bent on combating the dropout crisis. After receiving a month of training, I have been working inside and outside of the classroom tutoring, mentoring, and coaching students as a corps member in Sheepshead Bay High School. I believe strongly in the power of education and I absolutely love teaching.

My favorite and best subjects have always been High School Mathematics (Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry) and English (Comparative Literature, Language Arts, Grammar, Comprehension). I also have experience tutoring one-on-one and in small groups as well as experience in a classroom as a teacher's assistant.

I believe in meeting the student where they are and varying my approach based on their needs. I also believe in fostering independence, instead of simply helping them find the answers.

Math has been my favorite subject throughout my schooling and especially in high school (Algebra and Geometry). I scored a 640 on the SAT math section and have only continued to improve my skill set and reinforce my proficiency.

As a City year corps member working in a high school, I work with repeater algebra students who struggle with pre-algebra concepts such as: Integers, Fractions, Decimals, Properties of operations, the order of operations, factorization and exponents.

As an aspiring writer of short stories, I've always paid close attention to vocabulary, grammar, syntax and connotations as these are the literary devices most prominently found in fictitious literature.
