If you are looking for that rare blend of professional credentials, patience, a genuine love of the language arts, and a sense of humor, I may be the ideal tutor for your child.
I am a published author, performance poet, and professional copy editor for the biggest and best publishing houses. This means that writing and reading comprehension are not just things that I teach; I do them every day.
After earning MFA credits in Creative Writing and Literature, I graduated with a Masters in Teaching and New York State/City certification to teach English at the secondary school (grades 6 - 12) level. I am particularly comfortable and experienced in working with this age group, and devote thorough, one-on-one attention toward improving their writing and reading skills in English, Social Studies, and any other required class or elective that requires writing and reading. This includes the SAT and the frequently dreaded college entrance essay.
I also teach students an often overlooked skill: how to proofread their work and effectively organize their thoughts.
I have designed several enjoyable exercises to help students overcome their fear or dislike of writing. Interestingly, these same exercises also benefit students who have a natural aptitude for creative writing! I absolutely welcome students who have a special interest in writing fiction or poetry, because creativity is often overlooked by English teachers who must constantly teach to some test or other.
I help students become confident, effective writers and solid readers--not just for school, but for life.
