I am an interpersonal, active, engaging, and modern-thinking teacher who is passionate about the intersection of the arts and humanities. I come from a background that is highly interdisciplinary, which means that I am very adaptable to new personalities and individual needs, and I am constantly seeking alternative ways to change our processes of learning. I think that any "lesson plan" needs to be based on what the student is interested in, and my priority is to identify the strengths and talents of each student and to further them to their maximum ability.

I myself am an experimental/interdisciplinary artist working across genres as: a working, widely-published writer (poetry, playwriting, screenwriting, comic strip), a classically trained musician/vocalist (folk, jazz, soul, rock, blues, even pop!), and performer (modern stage, film, ballet, African dance, Groundlings improv, Shakespeare). I graduated from Brown University in 2012 with a degree in Literary Arts, concentrating in poetry and French translation. Prior to this, I spent years studying acting with famous "Method"/Stanislavski teachers such as Geoffrey Horne (The Bridge on the River Kwai) and Judith Butler (who worked with Elia Kazan).

What I have to offer you, and/or your child, is boundless energy, a great depth of knowledge in each field that I specialize in, and genuine passion for nurturing creativity and originality. I bring to the table complete non-judgement, an open heart and mind, but also an understanding of the need for focus, discipline, and organization. I am fully-equipped to help you with your studies of English language and literature, comparative literature, creative writing, and theater and film (acting, voice, and movement technique and history). I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Film

While a student at Brown University, I excelled in several advanced film courses, including History of Political Cinema and the Horror Film. Moreover, I also served as Senior Programmer and Co-Creative Director during my freshman and sophomore years, respectively, for the largest student-run film festival in the world, the Ivy Film Festival. During my penultimate year at Brown, I was an Archival Assistant and Film Projectionist for the Modern Culture and Media department (Brown's "Film" department).

Songwriting

During my time at Brown University, I took several key courses, including On Songs and Songwriting and Music Theory, as well as many music ensemble classes. Though I am trained classically as a pianist and vocalist, I did not find my "voice" as a singer-songwriter until I fell into blues, soul, jazz, and rock. Since then, I have headlined all over New York City at venues such as The Bitter End, Pianos, Sidewalk Cafe, ShapeShifter Lab, and others.

Voice (Music)

As a classically trained vocalist who began studying opera and jazz techniques at age 11, I have been on a journey of discovery involving the human voice for most of my life. While I am professionally proficient in classical techniques, my passion lies in the art of singing the blues. After years of my traditional training, only through the music of the blues did I truly learn how to breathe effortlessly, to use my lungs as an instrument. As a holistic music teacher who believes that finding your emotional truth in a song is the key to finding your greatest voice, I am grateful for the opportunity to teach something that has saved my own life.
