My name is Haran and I have over a decade of experience in teaching and tutoring English. I am determined to help my students achieve by giving them the tools they need to be successful in secondary English and beyond.
I graduated from the University at Buffalo with a degree in English. I continued my education at Teachers College, Columbia University where I learned the most current theories and practices in teaching reading and writing.
I have extensive experience helping students excel in the New York State English regents exams, as well as preparing students for the AP Language and Composition exam. In addition, I am adept at strengthening students' skills for both the verbal and essay sections of the SAT and ACT exams. I have worked with students at all levels, whether they are struggling readers and writers or high performing students who want to continue their progress and improve in their ability to analyze complex literature and write more sophisticated essays.
I take a comprehensive approach to tutoring. After I determine the students' current reading and writing levels, I then help them recognize their strengths and make them aware of areas they need to improve. Then I will develop a plan that is built upon the students’ strengths while addressing all of the areas they need to improve. Working one-on-one with students reaps the biggest rewards for both improvement in skill and grade.
Most recently, I participated in a summer program that helped high school students develop skills for college level writing. I taught students how to closely read, analyze, and interpret non-fiction essays. Through these assignments students improved in their ability to write college level essays. Students rewrote essays based on written feedback, I provided, and partaking in one-on-one meetings.
I am familiar with many of the canonical works often read in a high school English classroom. I have taught various types of essays, from narrative, to expository, to college applications. My experiences would make me a qualified candidate for most English students' needs.
I have a significant level of experience in teaching the ACT essay. I teach students how to address and annotate the prompt to organize a response. Students will learn how to identify a key point to elaborate on using their own ideas from their past studies and experiences. Students will practice summarizing the passage and articulating a response based on their own thinking. I will teach students how to plan, organize, and write an essay within the time constraints of the test.
I have been teaching and tutoring English for over ten years. I am familiar with all the parts of the English classroom. I know the various expectations placed upon students and I know how to help them be successful in reaching them. I have guided students through various readings from non-fiction, to fiction, to poetry. They are able to speak and write with authority about works that we cover. I have also guided students in writing as they take on different assignments. I am familiar with persuasive, narrative, and various other essays students are asked to write in an English classroom. I teach students ways for them to approach these writing assignments with confidence. The strategies that I have developed as a teacher have helped guide my students in reaching and surpassing their own academic expectations.
I approach teaching grammar by showing students basic strategies that they can easily incorporate into their own writing. I show students easy ways to memorize grammar rules. I patiently guide them as they practice and slowly internalize and apply these grammar rules naturally. Through work and practice students will be able to better express themselves clearly and correctly with confidence.
I have been helping students approach and understand literature throughout my teaching career. As students are introduced to a wider variety of pieces in both content and sophistication they become more comfortable in taking on new and unfamiliar works. With this new appreciation and understanding, they will be able to apply their thinking to any literary discussion or apply it to their own writing that would require them to articulate their understanding about a piece of literature.
I teach students how to use their own internal sense of knowing what is grammatically correct by listening to how a sentence sounds. I would teach students how they can simply improve their writing without inundating them with overly complicated rules.
When students practice the PSAT, it is important that they are familiar with all parts of the verbal portion of the exam. I will make sure that they become skilled in how to determine the best answers while making efficient use of their time. Students will feel their confidence boost as they practice techniques that will lead them to be more successful while taking them exam.
In my years of teaching, I have helped give my students the skills and guided practice to become better readers. I teach students how to use close reading, especially when taking on new and unfamiliar writing. By doing this, students are able to annotate and grasp more sophisticated writing using their own knowledge and ability to ask questions. They will become familiar with how to analyze nonfiction, fiction, and poetry. They can articulate this understanding in their own writing and discussion. These skills will help improve their essay writing, where they can reveal their understanding or comment on another piece of writing with authority.
I have at least six years of experience teaching the English Regents. I am very familiar with the exam and have a high passing rate. I teach students proven strategies that they can easily apply. I work with students at the level they are at and help them excel. Through practice, students are able to break down and analyze writing/listening to answer all multiple choice questions and strengthen their ability to incorporate their insight and knowledge into both the shorter and longer essays.
The strategies that I teach students for the SAT Reading section will help them improve their test taking skills, give them an authority in determining the best answer, and grant them more confidence when they take the exam. I have tremendous patience when working with all students. I focus my attention in helping students realize and develop their own strengths. I teach the students various strategies they can easily be applied. As students apply these strategies to practice questions they will become proficient in answering them correctly with time limitations. They will enter the exam with strength and confidence in their own abilities.
The SAT Writing section draws from students' ability to brainstorm, organize, and construct a well defined argument using clear and concrete details within a time constraint. Students will learn this through practice. I will teach them skills they can apply on test day where they can use their time and effort efficiently and effectively to create a successful essay.
Vocabulary is improved through practice. I will teach students prefixes, suffixes, and roots. This will give them the ability to determine the meaning of many unfamiliar words. I can focus on specific subject vocabulary, if the student needs support in one area of their studies. All students will practice using new vocabulary words through reading, writing, and discussion. This will help improve their understanding and retention of not only the words they are introduced to, but of words that they will come across in their studies.
Teaching writing is one of my greatest strengths. I am familiar with all essay types from narrative to expository. If needed I will review and have students practice the parts of the writing process: brainstorming, organizing, drafting, editing, writing, and rewriting. With each essay, I closely read the students' writing and determine their strengths and most powerful points, as well as determine where and how they can improve. I share these findings with them verbally and in written feedback. And through the process of rewriting they begin to incorporate new skills while they construct more powerful and sophisticated pieces.
