Guitar, Music Composition and Music Theory lessons available for all ages, levels, and styles. My approach is to teach individuals to be well rounded musicians rather than just guitar players. My background includes years of studying and teaching classical and jazz music theory as well. It is equally important to develop the ear as it is to focus on technique. Someone who can listen to music with an educated ear can translate what they hear into their own playing. Every lesson is catered to the individual because each person learns differently and at their own pace. My lessons are focused but I don't add pressure to make students feel as if they are learning for my sake. If a student wants to play the guitar, there is no limit to how great they can be and I will offer a manageable routine that works for the individual. I have a Masters degree in Jazz guitar performance and composition from NYU and about 10 years of teaching experience including as an adjunct faculty member at NYU. Lessons are available in your home and I am willing to travel to most places in Manhattan and Brooklyn. It's a joy for me to watch my students develop and my hope is that my enthusiasm for the learning process is contagious.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

Music composition lessons includes understanding music theory in order to make sense of chord progressions and how they relate to melody. We will also cover general music in order to inform the composer about contrast and communication within the compositions. We will also cover counterpoint while discussing music theory.

I have a Masters degree in Jazz guitar performance and composition from NYU and about 10 years of teaching experience including as an adjunct faculty member at NYU.

Guitar

Guitar lessons will be tailored to the individual. I have been teaching guitar for over ten years and have taught everyone from beginners to the very advanced. I have a master's degree in Jazz guitar so I am very comfortable teaching everything from rock to jazz and my main goal is for my students to enjoy themselves while having a structured approach to learning.

Music History

Music history lessons can cover everything from pre-baroque renaissance music all the way to 20th and 21st century composed music. I can also teach jazz history as part of the general curriculum or as it's own subject.
I have a Masters degree in Jazz guitar performance and composition from NYU and about 10 years of teaching experience including as an adjunct faculty member at NYU.

Music Theory

Music theory lessons will cover any and all jazz and classical theory.

Songwriting

Song writing lessons will cover basic music theory in order to inform the students about how chord progressions work and why our ears have been drawn to similar chord progressions for hundreds of years. We will also cover some music history with this approach. Another critical element will be the analysis of music that interests the student so they can begin to understand how it works and incorporate elements into their own songwriting.

I have a Masters degree in Jazz guitar performance and composition from NYU and about 10 years of teaching experience including as an adjunct faculty member at NYU.
