Yale Graduate, 2 years as high school ESL teacher in rural China

Hi There!

I am a new transplant to NYC. I live in Park Slope and I am currently looking for full time work where Urban Planning, Public Advocacy, and Community Education meet. In the mean time, I friend referred me to this site to do some tutoring. I would say my biggest strength is in Mandarin Chinese. I have two years of experience living in a part of China where there are very few English speakers, so I have a good handle on spoken Chinese.

I also have two years of experience as a full time high school English teacher and as a private tutor teaching English to Chinese students. So I am used to designing curriculum, charting progress and engaging with students.

As for myself, I am a light hearted and sensitive person, with a sarcastic bent. My major hobbies include cycling, bike repair, badminton, cooking different ethnic foods, collecting music, making maps, farming and reading poetry. I graduating from Yale University with a degree in Environmental Studies and Urban Planning.

I studied intensive Mandarin in the summer of 2010 at the CET Academy in Beijing. I then lived and worked for two years in rural Anhui Province, China. I competed in Speech and Debate on the State and National level during my high school career. I also served as Vice President of the Team. I ranked 6th in the nation for Lincoln-Douglas Debate and 3rd in the nation in Parliamentary Debate in 2008. I also ranked 11th in the state of California in Congressional Debate in 2007 and 2008.
