Hello Math Students,

If you or your kids need help with math for the standardized admissions tests like the GRE, GMAT, and SAT, or math, statistics or economics courses, or school admissions tests, Regents and state exams, I can help you understand what you need to.

What these tests, and math in general, do is test your thinking process--your ability to think and reason logically. So you have to understand what you're doing and why, and if you do you can apply that to any problem on the test. I'll work with you to make sure the math clicks with you, and keep helping you with it until it does. In my experience people who've had trouble with math often have had teachers who weren't good at explaining how to do math, or went too fast; we'll go through problems step-by-step to make sure you understand each step and why you're doing it.

Of course, like anything, you can't improve without time and practice--the homework and repetition of what we're learning is indispensable for you to assimilate what you're learning well enough to do it confidently on the test. And once the problems start to click, they actually become fun. Like puzzles. Really.

I have a B.A. from Tufts University in economics and got an 800 on the SAT math section and several diagnostic tests for the GRE and GMAT that I've taken for the test-prep classes I taught. I've taught privately for several years, and before that taught test-prep classes at Baruch college for Cambridge Educational Services, in addition to tutoring students in algebra and geometry at Harlem Village Academy, one of the top charter schools in the city.

Thanks a lot for your interest, and look forward to speaking with you about your math studies, and hopefully working toward your higher score and better understanding of math soon.

-Ben

Algebra 1

I really enjoy helping students to understand the logic of algebra, and to recognize that it is a system in which each term has a distinct meaning and function; the key to doing well all in algebra, as in all math subjects, is to understand what all of the terms mean, and how you can work with information you're given in a step-by-step reasoning process to determine the answer you're asked for.

Algebra is all about logical thinking, and you should always understand WHY you're doing...

Geometry

I enjoy helping students understand the logic of geometry, and recognize that it is a system in which each shape, angle, line or term has a distinct meaning and function; the key to doing well in geometry, as with all math subjects, is to understand what all of the parts mean, and how you can work with information you're given in a step-by-step reasoning process to determine the answer you're asked for.

Prealgebra

I really enjoy working with students, and helping them understand the logic of pre-algebra, and to recognize that math is a system in which each term has a distinct meaning and function. The key to doing well all in pre-algebra, as in all math subjects, is to understand the meaning of all of the terms and rules, and how you can work with them in a step-by-step reasoning process to determine the answer you're asked for.

Precalculus

I really enjoy working with students and helping them understand the logic of pre-calculus. The key to doing well all in pre-calc, as in all math subjects, is to understand the meaning of all of the terms and rules, and how you can work with them in a step-by-step reasoning process to determine the answer you're asked for.

Pre-calculus is all about logical thinking, and you should always understand WHY you're doing each step and what it means--you shouldn't be forced to rely on memorization...

SAT Math

I tutor math for the SAT, and I really enjoy doing the questions on the test, and explaining to students the logic of the questions and how to think them through. The questions are really just little puzzles, and can become fun once you understand how to do them (well, maybe not quite fun for everyone, but at least more fun :))

With someone to show them the reasoning process involved in answering the questions, and how to recognize the step by step process to solve them, anyone can...
