I was privileged to work in an adult day habilitation center, Human Care Services, for developmentally delayed adults. This exposure led me to actually apply the techniques I learned in my academic studies. For instance, working in the day hab allowed me the opportunity to deal with many challenges that developmentally delayed adults go through such as manic depression, bi polar and mental retardation amongst others.
In addition to working in the day hab, I was also actively involved in my community by doing many hours of res hab, starting in the middle of my junior year in high school. I taught everyday skills to the downs syndrome girl whom I worked with, such as handling money and working on her social skills. Throughout my young adulthood, I tried to reach out to people who needed it most. I volunteered in Maimonides Hospital, in the geriatric department, assisting those patients who were unable to feed themselves. During my many visits to the hospital, I met many different people, some of whom just needed someone to talk to and others suffering from paranoia, and didn’t trust anyone.
I was also able to apply my skills in the classroom in which I taught history and English to 7th and 8th graders and computers to 9thgrade. In each class I used positive psychology to build the students self esteem and lowering their levels of stress. Encouraging the children notice the positive of what they were doing was a key tool to help my students reach their greatest potential. I also helped them build their self confidence by allowing each student to come up and teach the class for a short period of time. This past year I have had the opportunity to teach 2nd grade, all subjects and 4th grade Judaic studies. Approaching each child as an individual rather then a group was the method I used to reach out to all of my students. This way my students were able to succeed in each subject.
My varied work experiences have given me a strengthened ability to be able to relate to all people, from all cultural backgrounds.
With my excellent organizational abilities, exceptional interpersonal communication skills, responsibility, great leadership abilities, and being creative and productive I can help you achieve your greatest potential.
