Hello potential students!

My name is Reid and I recently received my PhD in experimental psychopathology from Tufts University. My research background is in the neurobiology of mood and anxiety disorders, but my graduate career has given me the opportunity to hone my understanding of statistics, biostats and SPSS.

I love tutoring students, especially when they're working on an interesting project.

Experience overview: For seven semesters, I've been a teaching assistant for a class called Research Methods in Clinical Psychology, which is an advanced undergraduate methods course. I've spent a lot of time with students who are struggling with statistics or research methods and I've developed a great way to help them to understand their subject.

Process: I start by figuring out where my student is confused and then I lay out a map based on where the student is and where they want to be. Afterward, I do my best to break down the concepts or methods, using pictures and diagrams to explain what the student is missing. Sometimes it's a PowerPoint and sometimes it's a hand-drawn presentation with paper and markers.

Once a student understands a concept, I ask them to explain it back to me. Previous research has shown that rehearsal of learned information can enhance encoding and increase the chance that the student retains that information. My students may notice that I take advantage of little psychology tricks.

But overall I like to keep things simple, but with diagrams.

Biostatistics

I've been working as a statistical consultant in the biomedical and social sciences for the past three years. During that time I've worked for researchers at Tufts University, Columbia, NYU, CUNY, and the CDC, where I've analyzed a number of different projects.

I've been tutoring biostats for the same amount of time, and have often taught my clients how to analyze and interpret their own results. I love teaching, so anytime I welcome any opportunity to integrate my tutoring into consulting work.

Microsoft Excel

I've been using excel for about 10 years. I love it!

Psychology

I have a Ph.D. in this discipline, but I specialize in emotion and mood disorders.

Public Speaking

I've given dozens of lectures, spoken at scientific conferences and defended my own research in front of crowds ranging from 5 to 200.

SPSS

I have considerable experience in data analysis in SPSS, not only using it in my research but also teaching students how to use the program. For seven semesters, I was the teaching assistant for Research Methods in Clinical Psychology, an advanced undergraduate methods course. In this role I taught undergraduates how to critique studies, run statistical analyses in SPSS and report their results using Excel and PowerPoint.

Statistics

I've been working as a statistical consultant in the biomedical and social sciences for the past three years. During that time I've worked for researchers at Tufts University, Columbia, NYU, CUNY, and the CDC, where I've analyzed a number of different projects.

I often work for private companies as well, including some video game and business consulting firms. In these roles, I'm often asked to design simple experiments, clean data, analyze the results and present my findings in handsome graphs and presentations.

I've been tutoring statistics for the same amount of time, and have often taught my clients how to analyze and interpret their own results. I love teaching, so anytime I welcome any opportunity to integrate my tutoring into consulting work.

Study Skills

I have a Ph.D. in psychology and I'm very familiar with the research behind study skills and mnemonic devices. As a teaching assistant, I routinely helped my students with their study skills and brought up hundreds of students' grades from C and Bs to As.
