ACT English
I made excellent scores on standardized tests during high school and college, and during my five years of tutoring work, I've often come across students needing assistance with ACT and SAT skills. I know how to teach the breakdown of the test, and I can help you (or your child) understand not only the answers we discuss, but also the way the test works when he/she takes it.
ACT Reading
The ACT Reading test is all about speed and context, two areas that I can help you master. We'll study test patterns and learn to identify key words to help you develop your own method for increasing your scores. I know how to teach the breakdown of the test, and I can help you (or your child) understand not only the answers we discuss, but also the way the test works when he/she takes it.
English
I am pursuing my Masters degree in English, and I have an excellent understanding of writing skills. Because I have 5 years of experience in tutoring, I know how to explain the intricacies of grammar. My students don't just memorize rules; they learn to incorporate them and grow as a writer.
ESL/ESOL
I have been tutoring ESL students in English and basic computer skills for the past 5 years. I tutored for my university's Writing Center as an undergraduate, and I am continuing my tutoring work as a graduate student. I have also worked as a private tutor. As a tutor at Fordham University, I help individual students, and I also plan workshops for large groups. I am extremely patient, and I have basic knowledge of the cultural differences in approaches to language, so I am able to help each student on a very personal level. I can work with adults or youths, and I have experience in tutoring many different kinds of writing, including business.
Grammar
My work as a graduate student in English more than qualifies me to help with grammatical issues. I know the rules for grammar and I know the ways to explain the rules. Students who work with me come away understanding how to apply grammatical rules to their everyday writing.
Reading
To get kids excited about reading, I use a responsive teaching method that targets their interests and their anxieties. We'll start with books that interest the student and try exercises that involve reading aloud, dividing and summarizing chapters, and talking about the student's frustrations and joys. My discussion-based tutoring avoids the anxiety of tests and increases student confidence while ensuring a rise in reading comprehension.
SAT Reading
The best way to beat a standardized test is to know the test. We'll work on test patterns and context clues to help you pump your scores. I made excellent scores on standardized tests during high school and college, and during my years of tutoring, I've often come across students needing assistance with ACT and SAT skills. I know how to teach the breakdown of the test, and I can help you (or your child) understand not only the answers we discuss, but also the way the test works when he/she takes it.
Writing
I'm a graduate student in English--writing is my life! I've taken classes on writing, and I know how to teach writing skills. My previous work as a tutor has been largely focused on making students better writers; we talk about everything from grammar to organization and clarity. I can help you write more clearly in any discipline.
