As co-editor of my college's literary magazine, I managed the layout of our publication using Adobe InDesign CS6, and CS5. I have also worked as the chief photographer for a summer camp, where I edited and laid out their yearbook.
I am a photographer with work published in "Midwestern Gothic," "The Grinnell Review," "Gogo Magazine," "Over/Under Magazine," and the "Scarlet and Black," Grinnell College's newspaper. For the past two years, I worked as the chief photographer for the Grinnell College Concerts Committee, photographing events and managing the website. I've had work shown in two gallery exhibitions, including a solo show.
I work with both digital and analogue cameras and edit in Photoshop CS6 and CS5, though I'm happy to help someone with CS4, too.
As a tutor at the writing center at Bard High School Early College, I worked frequently with students on their college essays. This work ranged from sketching outlines and finding interesting hooks to putting the final touches on polished drafts. I've also been an active recruiter for Grinnell College in soliciting admissions from high schoolers in the New York area and have successfully placed quite a few students at Grinnell.
I majored in English at Grinnell College, where I was co-editor in chief of Grinnell's premiere literary magazine, "The Grinnell Review." My articles, poems, and stories have appeared in "The New Inquiry," "The Rumpus," "Berlin Independents Guide," and many other publications. This year, I was awarded the Norton Writer's Prize, The Selden Whitcomb Prize, and the Lorabel Richardson Academy of American Poets Prize for my creative nonfiction and poetry. I have read widely in American, British, and world literature, and received a perfect score of 800 in the critical reading section of the SAT.
I have worked as an editor at NYCTV and have written and edited commercials, some of which are still aired on that channel. I've taken courses in photography and film history and worked as a production assistant on multiple independent films. I attended a summer screenwriting program at the University of Southern California and was a judge at my college's film festival. I have well-rounded knowledge of film history and theory in addition to my production and technical experience.
For many students, grammar is an afterthought, something to check at the last minute before turning in their paper, or something they forget entirely--but any strong writer knows syntax is just as important as diction, helping a writer prioritize ideas, make connections, and establish relationships of time and space. Through diagramming, reading, and writing exercises, I will pull up the hood of your sentences and show you how the engine of language runs.
Because my design and photography background, I do most of my work on Macintosh computers and have become very familiar with their most popular applications: Photoshop, InDesign, Final Cut, Keynote, Pages, iTunes, etc. I own an array of Mac products and feel confident that I could help an entry-level or intermediate user set-up their devices or troubleshoot software problems.

As editor of "The Grinnell Review," one of my primary duties is public speaking. I lead large committee meetings, host and perform as an MC at readings, and recite my own work in front of large audiences.
A challenging text can be intimidating; certainly Shakespeare's plays have scared away almost as many readers as they've enthralled. With my help, you can tackle even the most difficult works in the English canon and walk away with comprehension and satisfaction. I will teach you how to be an attentive and close reader, from analyzing complex grammatical structures to making broad thematic connections. I have insights to offer students from a wide variety of backgrounds: from the readers who are struggling to barely pass their next test, to those are who looking to take their AP paper to the next level. Improve your reading skills and finally take pleasure in literature!
With a strong background in German and Latin, I will take you from etymology to current usage, helping students to pick out common roots and use context to inform their understanding of unfamiliar words.
Do you have trouble organizing your essay into a coherent argument, need help polishing a thesis, or simply want another pair of eyes to review your writing for spelling and grammatical mistakes? I am an experienced writer and editor, and can help you take your writing from initial conception and planning to the final draft.
