I'm a professional teacher, published writer, book editor, and art-school graduate with a counseling background who offers gentle, effective tutoring in ALL pre-K-6th grade subjects, and in writing, reading, editing, speech, literature, drawing, geography, and psychology for students of all ages. With 25 years' experience, I use a proven, fun method to get even the most reluctant students focused and enthusiastic about their work. I emphasize an interdisciplinary method that uses the student's own unique personality and interests to make difficult subjects easier to approach and understand. Children, teens, and adult learners alike truly enjoy the time they spend with me, and learn to improve their skills in a way that will last a lifetime and affect their overall performance in all subjects. Many parents report that my tutoring has improved their children's general behavior as well, along with their grades and self-esteem. Adult clients value my crystal clear teaching, critiques, fixes, suggestions, and explanations regarding their written, spoken, visual, and other academic work. Above all, students value me for my understanding, customized approach, careful listening, wide experience, and mature knowledge base. I truly believe that every student can succeed and that every one of them has something new to teach us all.

Drawing

I hold a BFA, which includes art history and studio art: drawing, printmaking, painting, and design. On graduation, I won the award for best integration of art and literature for an original illustrated book of short stories which I wrote, designed, and printed traditionally (before computers). I have illustrated several books, as well as providing illustrations and art instruction for various children's workshops.

Elementary (K-6th)

For six years, I have taught at 826NYC.org, an educational center in Brooklyn, helping students K-6th with homework in all subjects, as well as facilitating and illustrating class group projects in story- and book-making. During the same period, I have also performed in-home tutoring for this age-group in all subjects both privately and through a tutoring agency. I have also created several workshops for K-6th in writing and reading, including one at Manhattan's Little Red School House. Finally, as the older sibling of a learning-disabled brother who was often home-schooled, I spent a good portion of my childhood tutoring him.

English

I am an expert in heightening the English skills of adults and children alike, including writing and speaking, whether you're a new language learner or a native speaker. I have taught and tutored, and been a writer, editor, and public speaker for 30 years, and have won awards for my writing and editing, as well as much praise from all my students. My teaching style is relaxed and kind, and always helps to encourage all learners' faith in themselves and all they can accomplish.

Psychology

As the older sister of a learning disabled, emotionally challenged brother, and a lifelong counselor, teacher, and coach of children as well as adults, I have a wealth of understanding and abilities in psychological thought and practice. I have also spent the last 30 years as an award-winning professional writer and editor, which has required and enhanced my skills in analyzing and addressing psychological issues, be they an author's own or the subject of his or her writing.

Public Speaking

As an award-winning editor and writer, I have spoken nationwide over the last 20 years about my own work, Harper's Magazine, journalism, writing, reading, and speech itself. I also appeared on WBEZ (Chicago Public Radio) for several years as a co-host for the Harper's Index segment of the Mara Tapp Show, and have been a guest several times on WNYC's Leonard Lopate Show, to discuss my work on the globally syndicated Harper's Index feature and related books. In addition, I have read and discussed my own fiction in many public venues and on WBAI-FM and WBEZ. Over a period of 20 years, I also coached 200 editorial interns in public speaking as part of their internship at the Magazine.

Reading

I have taught reading, writing, and language skills to students of all ages for several decades. I am an expert in heightening the English skills of adults and children alike, having been both a published author and an editor of one of the country’s best national magazines for many years. I can help any reader to expand his or her perception of words and their various arrangements, spellings, and meanings in a way that promotes life-long learning, problem-solving skills, and a genuine love of reading. My teaching style is relaxed and kind, and encourages all students’ faith in themselves and all they can accomplish.

Speech

I also regularly coach children and teens in public speaking as part of my tutoring work.

Writing

I have been a professional, published writer for thirty years. I spent most of that time as an editor of Harper's Magazine, one of the country's oldest and most respected magazines. My writing and editing there, of both fiction and non-fiction, won awards, and was included in several books. I have since edited 30 books by famous as well as new writers, as well as teaching writing and reading to children and adults alike at many venues. I have also spent my entire life tutoring young children in all aspects of writing, and believe that mastering and enjoying the act of writing improves children's entire approach to life, as well as their school work.

Patient and Knowledgeable We wanted a tutor for our daughter entering first grade so she would feel more confident about reading for the start of school. She had a number of early readers in her kindergarten class and we think this really shook her, to the point where she refused to even try. After half a summer of her refusing to practice at all, we decided we needed to put this in the hands of a tutor. What was most impo ...
